Default Won't boot or post!

Hey guys,

My new computer that I have been continually laboring over won't boot or post. I just finished reassembling it for the billionth time and when I push the power button, the fans spin and glow, and the cpu fan spins and after a couple seconds (when the monitor usually kicks in) everything just shuts off. I know the cpu fan is working and the mobo has power and everything seems to be wired up right.....

Any suggestions? To me I'm guessing a bad mobo or cpu?

Thanks

Has the pc booted before? Maybe you havent connected something correctly or the graphics card isnt seated all the way...check if your ram is in all correctly. Give us the stats on your pc.

Also, some people said that if you dont have the RPM portion of the cpu fan plugged into the header on the motherboard, the system won't boot. Just turn on then off.

It sounds like you don't have the cpu fan plugged into the monitoring header on the mobo. If it doesn't get the signal from the fan, it won't boot.

Ahh gentlemen, I knew of that very problem, so once it happened I even double checked that the fan speed header was in the cpu fan header on the mobo.

Yes the pc has booted before.

Would the graphics card not being full seated cause that?
specs for system are: DFI Lan Party NF2, 1700+, 1 gig of geil ram, 2 200 gig WD drives in a raid 0 setup, ati 9600pro

Hawklen: Yes you said it, but I said it better you. I hate you!

Dead: Do you get any beep codes? If your graphics card was unseated I believe you would get a beep code.

Dead man:

Try removing the graphics card and the memory, but leave the CPU. THen turn it on. You should get a 1-3 or 1-3-1 beep code from the motherboard if all is well...

don't forget about the HSF if it isn't mounted right the mobo will shutdown instantly if the CPU overheats.

Also take a look inside you atx connector, make sure you haven't had any shorts...

Slider: no beeps or anything, all seems well and right baout when the monitor kicks on, everything shuts off.

I'm startign to think I crushed the cpu when I put the new HSF on or something

Joose: Ok, i can't do that till this weekend cuz I'm up at school right now.
Any other suggestions for me to try this weekend?
Oh and what if I don't get a beep code? What does that mean?

What fan and heatsink are you using? Does your fan have ALL 3 wires on it? Is the 3 pin connector connected to the correct header?(most mobos only use 1 header to monitor the RPM) Try holding the Insert key while boot up. This will rule out the fan monitoring possibility.

Cool, I finally get to 100 posts!!! I had this problem after pulling my floppy drive apart and painting it. Blew out all the dust, put it back together and mad boot problems, just like what yours is doing. Try unplugging the power to the floppy and see what happens.

Here's what I would do:

- Remove everything from the case including the motherboard (Trouble shoot it out of the case)
- Reseat the processor and HSF
- Reseat your RAM
- Reseat your Video Card
- Reconnect your Powersupply

If it works, slowly, one by one, reconnect everything and boot. If everything works, place into case and repeat.

If it did not post, trouble shoot your Video Card, RAM, HSF and PowerSupply:

- Connect another video card and boot
- Use different Ram and boot
- Use a different PS and boot
- Use a different HSF and boot

If it still does not work, then you are left with two items it could be, the processor or mobo.

It means that either your motherboard, CPU or power supply is bad. Taz has a good suggestion though...try removing it from the case - it could be shorting on a standoff.

If, out of the case and with no vidcard or ram, you get no error codes (lights or beeps) then try a new power supply. If that doesn't work, then try your CPU in another machine. If that machine boots, then your CPU is OK, and your motherboard is bad. If it doesn't work in a known good machine, then your CPU is bad. Try a known good processor in your board to make sure that your motherboard isn't bad too.

Ain't troubleshooting a bitch?

Good luck!

have you ever slipped he screwdriver off the HSF and hit the MOBO? look for damage around the ZIF holddown, if you have did slip then you might have goudged a trace. I have done this, thee is no easy way to fix this...I hope this didn't happen!!
