Default error message when using dvd drive to play games

for a while i've been playing bf2 and bfme2 on my pc, using my NEC 3550-A somethin-rather and all was well

then this morning i have a friend over and he wants to see how my bf2 looks on my pc, so i show him

and it runs fine

afterwards we go to the movies (snakes on a plane is officially the best film ever) then walk back to my place i try to run bf2 and a windows error bubble pops up from the tray (like the one that tells you to update)

the message is as follows:

BF2.exe Error

The file or directory
\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\~e5.0001.dir.0000
is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.

granted, i havent had the chance to run the chkdsk utility or even find out wth it is (im at my friends house)

i also get the error message when i try to run bfme2 (also needs the cd in the drive) except with game.dat insttead of bf2.exe

i dont get the error however when i run cs source or any other steam games

this seems to point to something being wrong with dvd drive, although one of my drivers cds worked fine in when i checked it

so, im thinking something is screwed up with my dear sweet windows runnin stuff offa the drive

so i humbly request assistance

Ever try using CD Patches? Some people dont have good luck with them but personally I have never run into a problem with them on any game.

I get them from GameBurnWorld , Just make sure to make a backup of the original BF2.exe before you copy over it with a new one incase the patch doesnt work.

The other thing to remember would be to make sure that the patch you download is meant for the version of BF2 that you have ( 1.0, 1.3 etc.) There will be a separate version of the patch for CD and DVD.

I dont know if this will cure your problem or not.

well, a few things:

i have been using the most recent patch for both bf2 and bfme2 since i installed them without any trouble

also, if im right, cd images just trick windows into thinking you have another drive with the cd in it which i dont believe would work because both the cds are pristine (how could they get scrathed when one is in a case and the other was in the drive) and so im thinking, as i said, the problem is probably with windows dealing with the dvd drive, so making it think its still using a drive wont work

Still seems like it would be worth a try. If you backup the original file then you can just put it back to normal if the patch doesnt work. Atleast you wont lose anything.

yeah, i guess theres not much to lose, big problem is my friend, the ISO master, is away in vegas

im only hesitant because id rather fix the problem rather than just find a way around it

...too bad dvd drives dont have drivers that i could just reinstall

so if any one else thinks there may be another answer please help

hope it doesnt come to a reinstallation of windows

hoooray

because my hard drive is somewhat screwed up, windows occasionally runs the chkdsk when i boot, though before now, ive never had any problems before it ran

now all is well

i knew that if i started asking for help, the problem would fix itself, so thanks PCA for giving me a place to ask
