| Hey everyone, If anyone has followed any of my threads, you know that my computer can go take a dive in a pool :-p Ok it's not that bad. Anyways to save my parents the agony of continuing use with their P3 866Mhz DELL, they agreed to let me build a new computer and they will take my current one. However, the change doesn't have to happen that soon. I have both computer running side by side right now because i'm home for the summer from college and mainly because I hate powerline networking....it slows everything down :S. Playing games sucks on it. Oh yeah and my mother will not allow me to drill holes in the walls to route an ethernet cable to my room. So the question is this....should I build my computer this summer? With the AM2 and Conroe cpus coming out, will I be safer waiting for the new cpus...or build a nice system off the current AMD 64s. I dont want to be stuck not able to upgrade for awhile... a new cpu and mobo can really empty a wallet. What are your personal opinions guys? | ||

| Well with Intels new architecture only weeks away from release, id seriously recommend waiting around for that. Performance wise, its set to outstrip anything AMD currently have on offer, including their new AM2 setup. Wait a few weeks, get an Intel Core setup, and set up a simple wireless network. | I'd say wait... give the new technology some time to "mature" (especially the bios)... in a few months lot's of mainboards will be reviewed... plus you'll have a much broader range to choose from... and probably the price will already be lower (because of the fierce battle between AMD & Intel which, undoubtfully will take place..)... | Like TDR says.. let the technology mature - they are gonna be WAY ezxpensive when they first come out... thats just the nature of commercialism. Sucks but true... You could build a system around a socket 775 Mobo using the Pent D 805 (i think thats the one...) which is still a pretty cheap chip (Under £100 here) but is a BEAST of an overclocker... and then as long as you get the right Mobo you will be safe for Conroe as well. Just make sure you've got hte latest Intel northbridge chip on it and you are fine i think. Please correct me of im wrong there! Im thinking i might hit the january sales... should be some decent deals going on round then ![]() Mark | ||

| Build now and later. Thats what I'm doing. If you are a die hard AMD fan build now as the reviews don't seem to give the AM2 enough credit to justify the $$$ at this time. If you don't have a brand alegence and can wait, then wait for the intel conroe for the speed. I'm building now because I want dual core. And I'll build another when conroe comes out. | ||

| I say make the case now, and get the peripherals like your raptor (tehe) and a nice sata DVD drive, and the PSU then when youve got a awesome worklog with the case youve made, and have a few things in it like fans and the PSU the go out and figure what CPU and board youll get that way youll have something to do while they duke out performance | ||
