I have installed the drivers that came with the mother bord and still nothing. Should i go out and buy a either net card or is there somthing i'm missing thanks.

The mother bord is a biostar p4 478 socket. Thanks

Run through network setup wizard. Also check to see that your IP address is set to obtain automatically.

Actually, I have had more problems with wizards automatically assuming dhcp than other setups. If his networking equipment doesn't have anything that plays dhcp server anywhere, obviously that advice won't help.

What kind of network do you have haynes?

Most of my networks I set up with static IP addresses. I'm not moving computers in and out fast enough to need to use the overhead of dhcp anywhere. I have routers and broadband modems i've had to use that also demanded static ip's.

Ok let's start with the hardware then.

How is your computer hooked to your modem? Is there a hub between them or are they connected straight together with ethernet cable? Are you using a crossover cable?

Wink Borrow and debug

If possible, borrow an ETHERnet card from someone and use it to debug your problem.

If the card doesn't help, the problem may be elsewhere in the network.

If the card fixes the problem, then the problem is the mobo or drivers.

Hope this helps

Alright, my bad. Since you're kinda new, you should know that I have a dry sense of humor. No offense meant.

Anyway, you said little to none and you've got the drivers installed. I would wonder that if you got none if there was a BIOS update that should be performed to enable the feature. If you are getting little, then I would have to assume that the problem lies somewhere in your connection.

Do you have another computer hooked up via Cat5 or is this your only computer?

I have also had a lot of problems with onboard ethernet NICs.

You said you had installed the drivers that came with the mobo, I assume on the included CD. These can often be out of date and fixes may have been released after the initial drivers were burned to your CD. Have you checked Biostar's driver site to see if there is an updated driver set for your particular motherboard? If so, you may be able to burn them to a CD or transfer them via a thumbdrive from your laptop to the desktop. It may not fix a thing, but I always make sure to update drivers anyway to eliminate them as an issue.

dumb question...

did you try these couple of steps?

Ping 127.0.0.1 you should get a response back

turn off modem (or better yet unplug)... wait 3 to 5 minutes...

Turn back on modem

go to a command prompt (start-->run--> type command)

type ipconfig /release

type ipconfig /renew
