| Well, at work, I formated and reinstalled XP on an AMD Athlon XP 3000. Got it set up, had some odd BSOD's, bad PSU. Swapped it out with a new PSU, did my usual tweaks, and he was thrilled with his 'new' toy. All was well when I left for class. Now he calls me tonight saying he installed 15K, yes, 15,000 fonts on it and it is super slow, and he somehow changed WinXP's default font to one that is not English. So short of another reinstall, how do you fix this? New one to me! I found Font Frenzy on MajorGeeks, which is supposed to help with a large number of fonts. How the heck do you change WinXP's font? My guess is to boot into safemode and see what I can find out. ANY help would be greatly appreciated! Have a good one! E | ||

| My guess is that the 15K font installer changed the default fonts for him. If it has an uninstaller I would try that first if you can work your way through the windows visually. Maybe see if there were any system restore points to revert back to? For future reference, if you want to use any more than ~300 fonts with Windows, use font management software such as Extensis Suitcase or Adobe Type Manager... it will save you a LOT of headaches. | ||

| Thanks for the info! Well, at least the guy thinks big instead of small! What the heck would you do with that many fonts? Ahh well, if worse comes to worse I will just format/reinstall. Some people use Net Nanny, I need freaking Boss Nanny! And thanks for the links godfoot. Have a good one! E | ||

| Anything above 400 fonts and your asking for trouble no matter how they are installed. There is a limit to the fonts you can install, the limit is actually determined by file name length and registry, not the actual number of fonts. Once you hit that point any additional fonts you install become useless. And your system will suffer way before you hit the limit. Easy fix would be to copy normal system fonts from a good machine, delete everything in the fonts folder and install a fresh copy directly to the fonts folder. Another problem is crap fonts that come on CD's like 1500 fonts. They tend to be poorly made and often conflict with good fonts from reputable foundry's such as Adobe, Agfa, Linotype etc. Buying fonts like 15K fonts is like buying your spam protection and registry cleaner from a spyware vendor with spam advertising, it's stooopid. In my business, we charge extra for idiots who use crapware fonts. Like godfoot said, always use a font utility when working with a large number of fonts. You can set it to unload fonts on reboot keeping your system clean. | ||
