A friend of mine just asked me to fix her latop whihc was kicking up tons of error messages all the time and refused to let her shut it down.
it was running Windows 200 Proffessional, after some tinkering I decided to do a full re-install, but hse doesn't have the OS disk any more so i decided to install Windows XP, unfortunatly the laptop didn't like the disk and refuses to install XP at all, so i went to a backup plan and installed Windows 98SE, this was fine but of course 98 doesn't have all the drivers required for the laptop and one of those is the network adaptor so I can't just get windows to go online and find the correct drivers.

I'm stuck on how to solve this really as I don't want to have to by a wireless adaptor for an old machine just to get it online when i could build her a new desktop for £100.

The laptop is a Viglen and appears to be about 6 years old. The only identifying cod eI could find was Model: 2700c.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get XP running on this machine, hell any ideas why it won't install?

Reza.... I'd look for the ORIGINAL disk on the 'Web, for this 'Lappy.... problem is.... there were
(and probably are) manufacturers who order "customized" OS'es from Microsoft for their systems...

Those disks have all drivers & utilities "embedded"... whilsts it isn't impossible to install another
OS on these systems.. it usually requires a lot of "insight" on the particular hardware....

So... I reccomend either the OD (Original Disk) or a session of "vigorous searching" on the 'Net
for folks who.. "pulled it off"...

It almost came down to that, i enventually got it working with Windows 2000 but still didn't have all the drivers I needed for network adaptors, sound and display. Luckily I installed it using a NTFS filesystem so it let me run the Windows XP upgrade from WIndows. Its wierd though it was still saying code 1 error can't load from disk every time it rebooted to use the XP disk, but since all the set up stuff was already on the hard disk at tempo files all i had to do was pop the cd out, let the computer reboot and it would load the setup prgram and then ask for the disk.


Very luckily XP had all of the drivers required for this laptop, which I was amazed at so now it works properly, if a lttle slowly thanks to its 128mb of ram.
