Default How can I get this game installed on my desktop?

Hey people I have this problrm here and don't know what to do.

Ok I have this game I haven't played in a while. I lost the CD for the game, but I just realized that I have the the game installed on my laptop. The game installed on my laptop is called Warcraft III and I also have the expansion for the game Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne in my laptop all in one big folder named Warcraft III (that's how it was). I don't need the expansion for the game since I already have it on a CD. I just need the game (warcraft III) itself.

I was thinking since both the game and its expansion are on my laptop, I was going to try to burn all the folders/files in that Warcraft III folder on a DVD disc, and then try and see if the game would install on my PC. I don't have a DVD burner on my laptop, but I do have a CD burner. I tried to put all the folders/files on my CD, but there isn't enough space (the CD is completely blank). I was thinking of using two CDs for all the folders.

So now the question, if I do decide and burn all the folders of the game on a disc, will I get a screen asking me to install the game or will I get a screen with all the folders/files on the disc?
Because all I need is the installer files for the Warcraft III game that's all. I just want to install Warcraft III on my desktop and then I will regain all folders/files after the installation. Is there one specific file in the Warcraft III folder that can let me install the Warcraft III game?

Thanks for taking you time to read this. Any help is appreciated it and if the post it too confusing then I can try to clarify more.

It depends on the age of the game really, some do allow for direct copies of the game folders and in those cases all you have to is copy all the files from one computer to the same place on the other computer, place a shortcut of the .exe somewhere you can get to it easily and run the game like normal.

It is unlikly that it will ask you to install the game as the autorun for those files will most likly not have been copied to your hard disk.

Really all you can do is try and hope for the best?

I really don't want to hope for the best but rather want to get the game working.

Is there like a specific file in the Warcraft III folder that I can simply burn on a disc that will allow me to install the game?

I don't need every single file in the Warcraft III folder, just the file that will allow me to install the game.

Yeah I was afraid that would happen. I am thinking of doing what Reza suggested; copy all the files and move them on my desktop. I could do this by burning all the files/folders on a disc and then transfer them on my desktop from there. The problem is that if that plan doesn't work, I'll be out of 2 CDs. Blank CDs are cheap right?
Might as well try. Any other suggestions?

Oh and Pisci, do you play online with Frozen Throne?
I haven't played in six months, but if you want I'll play. I play on the east server.

you could always do a network transfer instead of burning disks.
as for online, firing up the ol' wintendo was a lapse of sanity ,i'd rather run linux.

If i recall warcraft 3 uses a safedisk copy protection on the cd. Without the cd the game will not be playable. Plus like someone else said probably not all the files are copied to the hard drive when the game is installed.

Im not saying its hopeless but its worth a shot.....

Well, if he copies the entire Warcraft folder and all the registry data he should be fine with the frozen throne disc, right?

I appreciate all the suggestions and help.

You guys are right about the copy protection thing. If you want to burn a backup copy of the game then it will not work. The computer will just read the burned cd and ask for the Warcraft III CD.

Is there like a specific file in my Warcraft III folder that will allow me to install the warcraft III game all over again?

I don't need every single file in my Warcraft III folder, just the one that will allow me to install Warcfat III again.

I am about t burn all the files of Warcraft III (the folder) on two discs, then transfer them on my desktop, and see how it goes.

There isn't a single file that allows you to install a game, there are all the files that are on your hard disk and and files specifically on the cd that install them to the correct places and make registry entires, you don't have a file which magically contains all the game data and installs it i'm afraid.

I have tried that with Unreal 2K4 with no success. I think when you copy the files, the date created and date last modified dont match, thus causing it to not run (I could be completely wrong). If u can get a program to find the CD key from the laptop's install, you may be able to borrow the CD from a friend and just punch in your code. I had to do that with Unreal after my CD drive ate one of the disks . I have been able to swap the HDD from one PC to another and have everything run great, as long as it has the same chipset (I know that doesn't help you, but it can be useful if anyone is doing any type of upgrading/ hardware migration).

Alright thanks all for the help. It seems as if it won;t work. I haven't tried to burn all the data on a disc because I don't want to waste three CDs
The Warcraft III folder on my laptop has all the patches and the game and it contains alot of data. The laptop doesn't have a DVD burner so I can't do much. I'll try to borrow a friends copy.
Thanks for the help.

I think just changing the date on your machine would work.

when you install a program, and that program uses .dll files... you need to register the .dll files with windows... typicaly thats what the installer does... now you can do that manualy... i will post how to do that later... but iu dont think that will work for you...

1... you would need to know where all the files are on the system (more then likely they are in other places besides program files)

2. you would need to know all the registy settings and export them

3. alot of times when programs are installed, they use keys inside of the registry that are "identifers" so if the name of the computer chages it wont work (there are more factors then computer name)

i would consider just scrapping the idea, and just rebuy the cd... or contact blizzard... if you have the legal cd keys you can contact blizzard and rebuy them for 10$ http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=awr0133p

Blizzards software is pretty secure, no real legal way of getting around thier copy protection. There are other ways of doing it but if you get caught, blizz tends to ban your IP/Cd-Key from bnet. Also when War3 installs several key files are left on the CD, and must be read for the program to start. There are programs/files you can download that will copy those files to your HD forcefully, but you need the original disk to do it. So your kinda out of luck.

Aww man I play on the east . I'll profile you when I get the game installed (should be 2-3 days when I buy it). I actually have an account on West so I'll add you to my buddy list in the game and will whisper.
