Default IE has Gremlins!

Today I received a request from a housemate to sort out her internet for her. It seems she turned her laptop off, and went away, and when she came back and turned it on, the internet just wouldn't work.

Further investigation of the problem reveals that it seems to be IE that is malfunctioning, as I've managed to send pings using command prompt and get Ad-Aware to update itself...but Internet Explorer remains stubbornly refusing to do anything.

I'll try FireFox on there tomorrow, but does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Back when I did computer repairs, I encountered someone who had a ME machine with a similiar problem, IE loaded up and 3 seconds later had an error message about generically being corrupt. Computer was ridiculously filled with spyware, so easy to blame that. I find that unless you keep your install very well kept, it will eventually just crap out after a certain amount of time...

EDIT: Hmm, didn't say what I did...well honestly, I'd move everything important off drive, and reformat or atleast reinstall. Because of the integration windows and IE have, problems with IE lead easily to problems with explorer...

Yeah, sounds about right. Will scan with Spybot tomorrow to double check that it isn't just Spyware (although Ad-Aware didn't find anything).

Well, with a problem like that, removing the spyware won't usually cut it, critical system files (I sound like a tool) have been corrupted and that's about irreversible.
