Default Apple iBook With Just A Dash Of Fresh Soy Sauce

My housemate recently broke a bottle of soy sauce inside his backpack, with his apple ibook in. He left it for 24 hours, tried to turn it on and got no joy. My take is, if you switch on a computer with a short circuit it's most likely a goner. My only advice to him is to take it apart, clean it and let it dry before putting it back together and crossing his fingers and I just wanted to see what anyone here had to recommend?

That sucks dude - When I was working at an RF comms manufacturer, one of the guys there dunked his new cellphone in the toilet - he used PCB flux cleaner spray (non conductive) to clean everything out and he frankensteined it just fine - That stuff's not the cheapest though (it's harsh on your lungs too) and may not work on soy sauce - i'll have to read the manufacturer's spec

If only your housemate had a plastic bag - he'd be fine

Why the hell did he have soy sauce in his back pack for?

You should just return it or see if you can...make up some excuse like "Well I was eating chinese food when a robber came by and took my note pad. I pulled it from him, but ended up spilling soy sauce all over the laptop" or something like that...

I dont mean to pick on you tonight but that was the stupidest thing I have heard in a while.

You should tell him to call apple and read over his warrenty. Worse comes to worse he may have to part it out on ebay or here. I saw that someone needs a ibook carcus.

Try turning it on without the battery in (while its plugged in) the battery maybe gone. Maybe I'm crazy but i just rinsed my keyboard out with regular water and let it sit for a week next to our heater and it was fine. I'd at least take it apart to see what it got on. I used to have a link on how to take those suckers apart cause I have one.

Its dead. Soy sauce = salt water. Plain water you can dry out and itd probably be fine, soda or something sticky you can clean with water and dry out. Something salty though is gonna eat through a lot of stuff on the board in the worst kinda way.

I got a funny story that involves a mac and being soaked in something.

An oil company came to my coworkers house to deliver heating oil. Turns out her house is not rigged for oil. It only had the oil pipe that goes outside.. nothing inside. They went to the wrong house. So she got 400 gallons of heating oil dumped in her basement. Long story short her macs were down there and got soaked in oil. She gave me the G4 and I let it dry for a few weeks. Then I shop vac'd it for a few hours and.. i use it everyday now. ;-)

Tell your friend I'll trade him a fresh bottle of Kikkoman (regular or reduced sodium) for his P-p-p-p-powerbook. Thanks

Edit I may be interested in the ram, HD and covering of if cause I would like to mod my ibook, so a back up covering for it would be nice. Do you know what size it is?

He ended up getting it repaired (it was insured!). How much compensation did your friend get over the heating oil incident?!

thanks for the link anyway Dreyco

It was a G4 and she said it was a G5 so she got paid for a G5. I think overall she got a $20k check. She lost 2 computers, furniture, and the floor was destroyed. I'd put down the original monalisa on the insurance papers. Remember that married with children episode when they stole al's car?

disclaimer- By my statements I don't suggest or support insurance fraud.

Exclamation Soda

Although this won't help soy sauce boy, I can tell you want happened with Lil' Squirrel.

She dumped a CoCola on my rather not-cheap Keytronic Lifetime Warranty keyboard - which specifically says no soda abuse.

So I was gonna shower with it and let it dry and see.

The mistake I think I made was waiting too long. The post-mortem autopsy when the shower didn't work seemed to indicate that the acids had eaten into the thin plastic sheet that holds the circuit traces in most modern keyboards.

Moral of the story: Wash QUICKLY, as well as dry THROUGHLY.
