Default PC dead after a loud pop!

Well my main rig just went belly up fro some reason... I am investigating now. I was in teh other room and heard a LOUD pop noise and when I went in the office room, my main pc was off with a very strong burning smell coming from it. I already took out the CPU but it looks fine. Do Athlon64's show any signs of dieing? I don;t see any burn marks... I first two suspects are the PSu and the CPU. Time to dig in... *sigh*

Sounds almost definitely like the PSU. I haven't had it happen in a computer, but we have an instrument in our research lab that did that once to me. Loud pop, acrid-smelling smoke, and it was D.U.N.

That sucks, man! What kind of PSU did you have in there?

I'll second that, it's most definaitly the PSU. Burning, plus pop, and sometimes flame. Happened to me yesterday with an old 125 watter. That really sucks GK.

Hope you get it fixed soon.

Unhappy

A "pop" sound usually indicates a condensor (hope I "translated" the word ok, I'm Dutch......) "passed away"... So I should check those around the 'socket and the ones in the PSU...

Wow that is weird, the same thing happened to me a work today.

It is prob (95% sure) the PSU

That sound you heard was prob a capacitor "pooping". Open up the psu and look at the top of the capacitors if you see any that looked like the top is split...there is you answer. I would also check the mobo for the same thing just in case.

Yup, it was the PSU. I threw a backup PSU in there and it fired right back up. The PSU that died is an Enermax Liberty which has only been running about 2 months. Time to call Enermax.

good to hear. I would be shaking in my boots when I went to hit the power button after installing the backup PSU though

Weird that it would blow after a couple of months. That's what you get for running that massaging office chair off of a molex
