Default Websites do not load

Motorola Surfband modem
Netgear MR814 v2 w/ latest firmware

My machine is an Asus K8V, AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 1024MB PC3200, XP Pro x64, nothing funky.

This problem has been happening for a while now. I type in a website, in IE6 or Opera 8, and it doesn't load. Could not locate remote server error. I refresh, once sometimes, 3-4 times on occasion, and then the page comes up. I am plugged directly into the router, along with my parent's PC, which doesn't have this problem. I have the default settings for Opera and IE6, and have cleared my cookies, temporary internet files, Java cache, and release and renewed my IP. My router doesn't have anything funky like filtering or blocking enabled. The modem and router have been reset to no avail. This has been happening forever, but it's unbearable now. Ad-Aware SE and virus scans come up empty.

I pinged google just now, lost one packet, the rest averaged at 46ms. I pinged websites I haven't been to in the past few weeks, whitehouse.gov and tigerdirect.com. All packets, 4 for each site, were lost.

I am running a 75 foot CAT5 from my the router across the house to my room. Could that be deteriorating causing this?

probably already checked, but if you got a firewall try disabling it.

Look for Twists or sharp bends in the cat 5. If its kinked, it might be screwed over... I have 100ft cat 6 with no problems running to my room. Check for spyware and adware, they tend to mess things up in IE...

No firewalls. I do have kinks, twists, bends, etc in the Cat5. My parent's PC doesn't have this problem, but it won't ping tigerdirect.com or whitehouse.gov. What websites are pingable by you guys? I just replaced the Cat5 to my parent's PC and the modem to the router.

It might be that 75 footer. I know that CAT5 should be good for 100m or 300 feet but you never know.

Plugged directly into router where my parent's PC is, same problems. Tried two new 6" cables. I'm thinking it's this godforsaken router now. I have a crossover cable adapter, so I'm going to try just forgoing this damn router and use ICS.

Edit: Works perfectly with ICS. So my router is a POS. Good to know.

Just to make sure your router is not completely gone, have you tried setting up advanced port forwarding for IE and Opera? Not sure why it wouldn't auto-set, but maybe something's screwy there.

I don't think you mentioned it, but what kind of router are/were you using? I had an Xterasys 4-port switch ($25@NewEgg, got just to hook up the Xbox) and the thing fried in about two months. Then, got a Linksys 4-port wired router and the advanced customization, i.e. the port forwarding still allows me to host games and stuff on Warcraft after working with it for a while. Works good and is a good router, in my opinion.

Since you're running this pretty long cable, thought about going wireless?

For future reference, CAT-5e is good for ~290ft, and I like D-Link routers.

Not all cat5 or cat5e is equal. Or should I say the connectors too. I had this problem for a while with our 100ft cable that connected our LAN to the Internet at our local lan. We had the same lost packets and everything. We ended up by a new cable www.cat5cableguy.com and it fixed the problem. I was curious so I emailed him since he seems to be the know it all about this stuff. He told me that cables are not equal since differnet cables are made of different types of copper and how they make it too. But one of them main problems is the RJ-45 connectors. If you have a slightly weak connection it will cause a lost packet due to the weak signal making it down the cable. Many companies will sell and use the wrong connectors too for stranded vs. solid cabling and they will make a difference, since they have different copper clamp shapes, and using the wrong one will increase resistance. One thing that will help lost packets in long distances is to run at 10mbps instead of 100mbps, we ran our lan on 10mbps and it ran flawlessly, til we bought a new cable. Good luck bro!!!

I do like D-link routers too but not there wifi nic's.

True, the jacks can make a difference. I prefer Ortronics jacks/receptacles personally.
