Im new to this forum and just recently came across a problem thats got me stumped. My pc wont boot windows fully. I power up and all i get is a toolbar, icons on desktop, and busy cursor. Everything is froze aside from the mouse which i can move but nothing else. I hit ctrl alt delete to reboot and windows boots fully with no problem. Can someone help me please. Thanks

Pull your sound card, network or modem card, and anything else you may have besides your video card. If the computer boots then you start adding them back until it shows the symptoms again.

If pulling the cards doesn't help, it is either a vid card problem or software problem. Use msconfig to turn off any programs that are starting up and see if that helps. Other than that, you didn't give us much to work with (components, programs, etc...)

You wouldnt happen to be using an ata 33 cable with an ata 100 drive would you? One of the first pcs I ever built for someone else did what you are describing and would only work after I restarted from within Windows. It was the most peculiar thing. I replaced the cable and it worked fine after that

Default many thanks

I do believe I have fixed my problem. I have spent all evening ripping apart my machine and putting it back together again and i think I have it figured out. Its sound card related, I think the registry got screwed up. On a fresh install of the sb live 5.1 software, it installs a startup logo for EAX animation. When i disable that i loose a file in msconfig/startup called CTAVTRAY.exe. Bottom line is I keep the startup animation and my machine boots fine. One of the most screwed up things I ever came acrossed. Anywho to all those who helped by suggestion thanks a million.
