| Apex Tech Maniac | Recently I formatted my sister's computer - she messed it up, I mean really messed it up, some how it completely reserved our printer on a netgear print server and no one else in the house could connect to it and most of the time she doesn't know what she's doing (sorry, I mean network stuff) - and upgraded her to Windows XP pro from 98B. She connects to the network via a linksys 11Mb/s pci card. She can connect to the network and internet just fine but the computer doesn't seem to want to use or see the DNS server that everyone else in the house uses. She downloads a lot of junk and uses internet explorer even though I've given her the FireFox is better lecture. A found a similar fourm here but it doesn't have a solution besides restarting which I've tried. She has Norton system works 2003, Microsoft anti spyware beta thing and Zone Alarm but I am still thinking it's a virus (she never updates her deffinitions or scans and uses IE... still). Any help or suggestions would be great! thanks

![]() ![]() | Can you try something for me: open up command line (Start -> Run -> "cmd" (without the quotes)) <---- assumes that you don't know that already. If you do; ignore it. type in
in it please. Look for the DHCP server and also the DNS resolution. If you have other systems that can connect to the internet, see if you can ping the DNS address. If everybody else can and she can't, ping the gateway and also the DHCP server to check for connectivity. Why don't we start with that, and we'll see what happens before I write yet-another-essay on "how to debug your wireless network"

| Sir Knight of Spamalot | Wait if you just formated...it should be fine? Because the virus would be deleted....How did you format? Did you delete the paratition first and then reformat? The firewall could be blocking incoming connections from the netowork. try totaly closing the firewall.

| Apex Tech Maniac | Thanks sexy_pants, alpha and nerdz. I did ipconfig /all (had no idea the /all existed) and got the information I set manually and some other cool stuff. Then I tried disabling the fire wall like nerdz suggested and then restarted the network connection... BINGO! Thanks, would not have figured that out, but I can go yell at my sister for not accepting the process (think it's scvhost or something) and giving me a hard time for the last week about how it doesn't work. O P.S. thanks a lot for making me look so stoopeid (and I am planning on getting my ccna this summer too!).

You're welcome. Glad that it worked out for you. re: ipconfig there are a whole list of switches that can be appended to that command. I think that you can try
for the complete list. Most of the time if I do use it, it's with /all, /release and /renew switches. (For display info, release DHCP, and renew DHCP respectively.) svchost is as much good as it is evil. wireless network is evil. (granted it's a lot easier than the days of token ring networks over coax cable, and Novell days.) *shudders* To the surprise of some (most), I actually don't have any certification in anything computer related. MCSE doesn't mean much to me because I've heard a lot of stories about people who are MCSE certified and can't perform basic tasks such as formatting a floppy! If you are serious about learning CCNA, you need a *nix system so that way you can tap into more of the settings, DNS, NIS, LDAP, RBAC, and DHCP. Windows either hides too much stuff from you, or it doesn't HAVE the option to make the modifications you can on a *nix system.

Yeah, I've heard that it's real easy to get the ccna, I just thought I'd throw it in because I feel it shows my embarmassment... TO THE EXTREME! thanks again

*shrug* I don't have it and I don't plan on ever getting it. <--- can't picture myself actually working in the computer industry. Most of the stuff I know I learned because I wanted to try it. Believe me, I've gotten a fair amount of flak for diving into Solaris from WIndows and now; the same group of people who were pushing Linux originally are now trying out Solaris (some of them for the first time) and they're asking me stuff about it. Smart people, but not necessarily always right. (Neither am I for that matter.)
