Default Internet Connection Woes

Hey all. Recently I have had some really bad conections to the net. Tonight is the worst. I am on Comcast high speed cable. I will literally ping out of my online racing game and within 3 minutes I can reconnect. My ping is as high as 111 to the server where the game is hosted. It tends to slowly rise from 99 to 111 but it's not that high of a ping to be concerned as far as game wise.

I have a Toshiba PCX2600 modem with a Linksys G wireless router. I tried my Linksys NIC with a different one to rule out nIC issues and that's ok. I thought it was the router so I unplugged that and was directly connected to the modem and I still have issues. I'm thinking it's either the router or the cable. I would hate to go out and spend anotehr $80 on a modem to just test the old one.

The Comcast connection at my parents' house has always been pretty solid, however the Adelphia connection in my apartment has had issues.

I suggest calling Comcast and asking if there are any outages in your area. Sometimes when blades go down they divert service thru other blades.

If those numbers are in kbits, then you've got damn good speeds for cable, I calculate right under 400kbytes down, and 42 up. I get half that on a regular day.

If you still call Comcast, make sure you specify that it's not the speed, it's the response time. I had solid donwload speeds, but my latency/response was terrible, and of course, it's more the latter that makes the difference in online gaming.

Jim.........111 ping is not bad at all (I deal with servers at another site I Admin at).......and your ping level is often determined by a number of factors:

1. Who's on the server can have a detrimental effect on ping........especially if the other people are doing other things while playing like downloading movies or music.

2. If other players are from another country (another big one).

3. The server it's self........number of players might be set to high.

4. Server might need to be simply rebooted or cycled to give it a fresh start.

5. Server game mods can influence the ping.

On all of the servers that I play on (HL2, UT04 and now BF2), the majority of the players run between 40 and up to 130 ping on average, with excellent playing. All the servers that are in my group, have "high-ping managers" in that if a player (exception Admins) runs a ping higher than 200, will get kicked from the server for the game. The 1st and 2nd items are usually the culpret in causing high pings for EVERYONE on that server.

Well I have been offline for around 2 days and finally have a connection back. I called Comcast and they said everything looked good on the modem and that there reports show it never dropping connection. I found this to be BS because I have power cycled it so many times.

Tonight I decided to drop my router and as of right now my connection to the net is still going ok. I'm connected through my modem only.

I'm beginning to think that my router is the problem. What it is I have no clue. Could it be something in the setup got whacked? Possibly...

If I lose connection while connected to the modem then I know it could be lines or Comcast.

Yeah it sounds like you've got solid numbers. As far as ping, download, and upload. I might not be a problem on your end.
