Default Did it just die, or did I kill it? Or is it OK

I need a little help with a general computer problem. We have a computer at work that was unstable, random restarts and stuff. If was rerely used, but now my boss wants to use it so I took it home to check it out. I saw that the Northbridge fan was dead, replaced that with a spare I had, and the CPU fan sounded like it was on it's last leg, so I replaced it, put some AS5 on the CPU and some Vantec thermal goop on the NB.

I got it booted up, downloaded and got some spyware off of it, then for the heck of it, I went into the BIOS to see what it would do. Not many options, so I just set it to Optimized settings (it has Failsafe and Optimized as your options). Now I get no POST, no beep, nothing, just the fans spinning. I think I have cleared the CMOS, took out the battery (w/o power attached), and moved the jumper, and also removed the jumper for a few mins to clear, nothing is labeled CMOS. I have also reseated the heatsink, just to make sure I had it on right. I am going to try another PSU next, any other ideas?

The CPU is an Athlon 2200, I have tried 3 sticks of ram. The mobo is a total generic, no name on it anywhere. All I know about it is it has 2 DDR slots, 3 PCI, a brown socket smaller than an AGP where the agp should be. It has onboard sound and video. I know that is not much help on the mobo, but I cannont find a name anywhere on it.

Sorry about the long post, I would greatly appreciate any help!

Sounds like a SOYO or a PCChips. Reset the CMOS with the PSU unplugged, let it sit unplugged for like 20 or 30 sec. so the capacitors can discharge appropriately and then reset the cmos. I had a similar issue with my DFI LanParty. Problem solved.

Sounds really strange. I think j-dogg has given you your only option. Unless you did something you forgotten to tell us about.

I am not sure where the CMOS is, I found out the board was made by FIC. To clear the CMOS, I unplugged it, took out the battery, let it sit for a while, then just moved the one jumper near the battery (wrote down where it was originally to be safe), and put a jumper on 2 pins near the battery (again, no power or battery), made sure everything was put back to normal, put the battery back in, still no POST, just spinning fans.

Thanks for the help! This is just bugging me. Any other ideas? The only thing I can think of is if the CMOS is in an odd place, I have looked all over the board and do not see it marked anywhere.

Thanks again for your time.

I've never had a FIC board before. They are usually considered an economy mobo. The CMOS jumper is usually the jumper closest to the battery. Sorry but this is all I can tell you here.

Lightbulb It's Alive, thanks

Problem solved! I greatly appreciate your quick responces. I forgot to mention this also has an additional PCI (old school) GPU in it. Apparently the optimized BIOS options offended said card and it would not let it boot. This thing has been off the net for a while, I am getting a ton of winblows updates on it!

I have it up and updating without the older ATI card, once it is updated, I will try to get the other video card on. The second card is for running 2 monitors.

Sorry about the noob question, I should have known to take out all hardware not critical to booting!

Thanks again, I will go slam my hand in the door for being an idiot!

I have to give you points for trying Capt.Planet! But of course you know resistance is futile... I saw 4 or 5 networked computers in this computers (my newest borg) new home. Most of them are Mac's, (the devils tool)! But I think I can get them folding!

Have a great one all!
