Default Reformating / Backup problems.

Ok so im trying to backup and reformat a REALLY messed up computer. My first thought was to try and burn the contents of the important folders with the internal cd-rom burner...but the computer cant recognize the drive..says its not accessible. Then i tried using a USB cd-rw...still says the drive is inaccessible...then i tried a flash memory stick...same thing. So basically, how do i get teh computer to recognize the drives?

Will this work?

Do you have another pc that you can put the burner in and send files over the network. And back it from that pc.

.....use partition magic, create a new partition, copy everything to it, format the old partition....

why do i feel like PR is being advertised on the wall of a Waffle House bathroom somewhere?

Guess IHOP wasn't a good choice to place an ad.

now then depending on how sensitive this information is and what kind of materials you have you may want to try this:

use ghost to make a image of the drive
This I suggest for 2 reasons. If files are corrupt you can have it do a raw image copy which will move all data as is, if windows is corrupt then you can place this new hard drive in a different computer with out any risk to original data.

I would suggest some more details as well. like what do you mean by messed up? are files gone? did you get some nasty virus? Did someone go at it with a baseball bat? Is it just shutting down randomly or not detecting things it used to(such as hard drive)

DETAILS are very helpful when you ask for help with computer problems, I swear next person that says my computer isn't working how do I fix it with out giving me details of what it is doing will die.

Oh yeah i forgot to mention what to do if you don't have and can not afford a spair hard drive, besides begging. Take your hard drive out and find a friend with a CD burner that know what they are doing with a Computer. Insert said hard drive as secondary drive and copy files you wish to keep to CD!~

Only way this does not work is if you have no friends or if there are physical defects in the hard drive, inwhich case I need to know so I can tell you what to do to rescue a failing hard disk.

BTW: getting the computer to recognize the drives may be difficult if your MB is bad or if windows is badly corrupted, better off just pulling the hard drive and starting with a fresh one. If windows got corrupted with that hard drive please do not install windows on it again and be surprised when this all happens again in a few weeks.

Because this quality comment was needed as well, if you going to nag me to use the edit feature when I double up my text please first police yourself.

Don't get me wrong I normally do, but when a post is already relaxed to the point of one liners I doubt a extra post is going to kill anyone.
