Default Windows Media Player problems

Hi guys, lately i have been having a problem with movie files in windows media player. The movie, a large file about 300-700mb is showing only 5 minutes or 50 seconds of total play time, yet when i scroll the progress bar it jumps to the end of the movie and is all laggy for a few seconds. Similarly when i open the file in winamp the total time says 1hr...or actual playing time yet hte progress bar still goes for like 50 seconds. This has happened to multiple movies I have downloaded so im not sure if they all are just corrupt or if my player is having serious problems. Any help would be great. Thanks.

(Seems like my recent battle cry)
More information please....
1) What is the file type? .mpg, .avi, .wmv?
2) Did the final file size = the listed file size on the site?
3) When you play the movie, is the dialogue in synch w/the movie?
4) Usually if the download is a (heavy, uncontrolled outflow of water) file, what may have happened is that one of the middle segments was not downloaded correctly.
5) We cannot rule out encoding issues w/the movie, can you take it to another computer and have it play? If it does, then its your media player, if not, its your media.

Not that it'll put the world right but try playing it in a descent player. Videolan or media player will rule out an encoding issue / player issue just like that.

this sounds very much like a player issue, easiest way to find out, go download something like winamp, media player classic, theres a million of them, see if they all do the same thing, if they do, then you know for a fact that its a codec issue...

basically what was said in the post before this one, but i didnt read until now...
