It is not a memory problem, but an aplication error. Most likely one that has to do with an image program. You need to write down the specific error numbers referenced (cannot make them out in your screenshot), so I can help further. that will lead to the program causing the issue.

it could also be a hardware error; either System RAM, CPU Cache or your hard drive (virtual memory). In addition, this error may also be caused by a motherboard problem (memory bus being corrupted).

To me, it doesn't sound like a software issue, because it's happening with more than one piece of software. The first step I'd take is to swap out your RAM with known good RAM. If the problem continues, then move on to the CPU. You can also try deleteing your page file and recreating it. (Google for information on how to do that). I'd also try running a hard drive diagnostic if these steps fail as well. But first, I'd swap out the RAM.

In the forum thread I linked to in my original message, someone posted a link to the Steam forums where they said it was because either the memory was in the wrong slot, corrupt, overlocked, or there's a bad mobo. I'm going to reseat the memory module and see if that helps. I've moved the computer around before and that could have moved a memory module or something.

I called Dell and they told me to reseat the memory. I called Dell because I have a 3 year warrenty on my computer and if the memory is corrupt, I want them to replace it. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered. And Dell also said if I accidently damage the computer while on the phone with them, they'll cover the damage. So although Dell sucks, I'm going to do it because I want Dell to pay for a new mobo if my hand does through it or something lol. I'm not a noob who relies on Dell tech support.

The reason I say it is an application is that I had the same thing happen, and it turned out to be Norton AV that was causing it. This is the message I was getting:
Quote:
Application Error-The instruction at "0x0040a31e" referenced memory at "0x00000000" The memory could not be "read". Click on Ok to terminate program.

If you do a search it refers to NAV. So I had to do a re-install to correct the problem.

And if you look at the top of the error message it says Application Error.

No luck. I shut down AVG and ended all of its processes. After that I fired up GIMP and got the same error when trying to open a JPG.

No, I did not mean it was your AV. As I said that was the message from my error. Yours I believe has to do with some graphics program. Have you tried uninstalling GIMP?

Last time I saw that error repeatedly I had a "Defective" stick of memory.. It was simular to a harddrive with a few bad clusters. It would post and do everything fine up to a point. Then it would crash my App and give me that message. I could click ok and go on again until the bad sector of memory was used again. I finally bought some new memory and I haven't seen that error message til now (your link).

I think that's my problem. I was talking to a Dell guy from India while I was reseating the memory. The memory came out fine, but it would not go back in. Both levers were all the way down, the notch at the bottom of the memory was level with the riser in the memory slot, and I was applying a lot of pressure. I was sure I was applying enough pressure because I could feel it in my thumbs. I tried this at least 4 or 5 times and also tried different slots. So the guy said he would send my two sticks of new memory. He's also sending a technician, which I don't want but I don't think I have a choice. I still want my Dell warranty so if the hard drive or something fails I don't have to pay for it.

So right now I'm on 256 MB of memory. The Dell guy was very helpful. People complain that Dell sucks, but my experience has been good. If I were a noob, Dell's service would have been enough. Dell did not try to hassle me or give me a hard time.

But I can't wait until I get the cash to build a rig!

Dell service isn't *that* bad. It's their machines that suck. If you got the warranty though, they're pretty good.

Foe, yes, it's an application error, but only because the application can't read from a specific memory bank. Since the error you got was trying to read from memory bank 0x00000000, that would point to software, because there is no bank 0x00000000.

Dude's getting the same error, with different applications, and it's referencing an actual memory address. While it still could be software (i.e. Windows or a driver) it's highly unlikely. If he keeps working with that stick he'll get a BSOD with error 0x00000077 (Kernel Inpage error) sooner or later, and that would defintely confirm a hardware error.

I reinstalled GIMP and no more error message. What's interesting though is I noticed the error said the memory couldn't be written, instead of read. I have been getting error messages that said the memory couldn't be read though. Like for example in MOHAA when going to the same spot on a map I would get that error. I would also get it when testing out a map that was bug free in Call of Duty. Maybe it is an OS error. Who knows?

Well, Dell's already sending out the memory. If that doesn't fix the problem, then it must be an OS thing.

It's weird though how I got the memory wouldn't go in. I tried and I tried with no luck. Can this even happen with memory? It was the right type and everything, it just wouldn't fit in. Everything was lined up and I was applying a lot of force.

A Dimension 4700.

I did check and I'm using the correct type of memory and everything.

Thank you for explaining that to me PJ. I am the poster child for the technically challenged, and can use all the help I can get.

I'm using Samsung PC 3200 DDR2 SDRAM at 400 mhz. This memory came preinstalled with my Dell.

I don't know what to think of my problem now. No more GIMP problems now that I reinstalled. But in MOHAA, I'm still getting this error, but I think it may be related to MOHAA because it happens in the same place in the same level each time. I guess I'll find out when I get my new memory.

Yeah like everyone said it sounds like the memory. Post you results so we know the outcome.
