Default answer plz,

im quite new to building but here it goes, if i took a harddrive out of my old comp and wanted to put it in a new one im building would i have to delete all the contents on it and start from scratch? because i dont have my windows xp cd right now, so would the os, information, and settings on the drive not be able to work properly since it would be placed on a new motherboard?

Let me see if I am understanding what you are asking.
You want to take a HDD and put it onto another setup. Right?

No worries mate. I do that all the time. As long as you are talking about IDE setup.

You already have the OS loaded onto the HDD right?

the only thing that you will have to do, is deal with all of the driver changes and XP is pretty good at that.

You will be allright.

Yup, you're in good hands with XP. Especially if your hardware is new or decently new, you probably won't even notice it install most of the drivers.

Like Duck said, if you are working with XP, it is pretty forgiving when it comes to drivers. It will ask for the new ones but rarely causes a conflict. If you run into a problem boot into safe mode, remove all of the device drivers, then reboot. It will reload them for you.

EDIT: You said you don't have the XP CD with you. You shouldn't need it but I would have it near me just in case.

There is a trick I learned for Win 9x that works pretty good for moving a hard drive to another system (or, say, a motherboard swap). It's not fool-proof, I've had maybe 2 problems out of 10 tries, but when it works, it saves you the time required to install Windows and totally reconfigure a system with your software; in my case, the better part of an entire weekend.

(A)
-Uninstall any software that executes commands at startup or other startup applets, or run MSCONFIG and disable everything except Explorer, Systray, and the 2 LoadPowerProfiles.
-restart in Safe Mode
-Go into Device Manager and delete every single device
-Shut down when done (if doing a mobo swap, skip to (B))
-Remove HD and put in second computer
-When booting up, Windows will redetect all motherboard drivers; you'll need the second computer's drivers ready.

(B)
(for a mobo swap)
-install new mobo and only install AGP card
-start up; Win 9x will redetect all the new chipset drivers and so on, allowing you to clean-install fresh mobo drivers
-shutdown, install your periph cards 1 by 1, and install drivers for them

Edit: I just noticed that BA already mentioned the Safe Mode Delete-All-Devices ploy.
