Default Got a new old crap PC left to experiment with....

Last person to buy a new rig from me left their old PC.

1.1 GHz AMD with 384MB RAM and nVidia MX440.........

I want to make a Linux rig to experiment with.....maybe dual boot XP so I have a PC I can use for testing equipment in.

Problem is my file server is aging - 733 Mhz p3 with 256mb ram. Should I

Use new PC as file server and use the old file server is Linux rig

or

Leave file server alone and use new rig as linux machine

I only want to bother with my file server if I will notice an improvement accessing files. I do not EVER set in front of the PC for anything - its just a large hard drive. I am only concerned with file access. If I open a folder with mass files I do experience some lag.....not 2 minutes but sometimes 30 seconds or so.

I'd say upgrade - Linux as your no doubt aware runs on anything so a file server upgrade is probably wellcome (and you'll be moving to an AMD system )

I don't know .... there was probably a good reason he left the old one behind .... If it croaks while your experimenting on it you can fix it in your own time, but if it conks while being used as a file server you'd probably have to fix it right away ...

what kind of motherboard aaron? glad that your going to be folding on it yes thaat rig would be a reasonable folding rig just left as is, unless you really want to upgrade it. have you ever thought about folding in a linux enviroment?

Can't remember where I saw it, but there are at least three different flavours of camouflage duct tape out there ....

... the way I learned it though, there's only one colour duct tape, and that's silver. Black is "gaffa tape", red, blue or any other colour is "tank tape"

It was running A1 before I formatted the hard drive to install XP - during the installation I discovered the hard drive was fugged up to the point I cannot finish the install. Had I not tried to "improve" the PC they may have never known about the mass amount of bad sectors on the hard drive - its truly trashed hardcore.....

currently downloading Red Hat.........
