Default Cable internet problem

Alright, my dad finally got tired of crappy aol and we finally got cable today. WOoHoo!!!! Just one problem though. We don't have a router yet and he has a comp, and I have a comp. The modem is by his computer so I bought a 100 ft. cable that is layin on the ground from my room to the modem. LoL. Yea, my mom likes that. ANyways, I thought that I should be able to just unhook his cat5 cable and plug mine into the modem, but my computer says it isn't connected. I checked internet settings, and they looked the same. Both computers obtain IP automatically. His connects, mine doesn't. Anybody know?

Also just found out that my computer doesn't show a default gateway. I'm sure that has something to do with it. Can anybody help? Or if it is possible can somebody tell me how to hook them both up using a switch? I have a netgear 8 port switch. Hopefully we can get a router soon though.

try an ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

see if its gets a default gateway, if it does try to ping it if it replies then try to ping say google

could be firewall issue

When hooking up a different pc to a cable modem, you must powercycle the modem each time.

Why?

The modem stores your pc mac address. By powercycling the modem, it will forget your dad's pc's mac address and learn yours.

I see what you are talking about. I never tried that.
