| Good thing I didn't try to quit smoking today! I just received a Syntax SV266A mobo yesterday and decided to put it together today. It is going into an HP Vectra (yes, proprietary for the most part) case. I am using the included PSU as well which did not have any problems running the old P3 Intel board that was in it. Granted, the P3 was a Slot style rather than a socket style. There is also no P4 aux connector on the mobo so that isn't an issue. The case does not have a reset switch so therefore there is no switch hooked to the mobo. Also, there are only 2 LEDs so I hooked them up to the HDD activity header and the MSG LED header (whatever the hell that is). Until I finally get around to getting a cooler for an nVidia Ti4200, I cannot use my FX5200 in it so I am using the old Matrox G4+ 32MB card that was in the P3 setup. I got everything hooked up as per usual and push the power switch and this rotten mofo will not work. The PSU fan spins up (has a seperate 3 pin mobo connector for it) and the CPU fan spins up but that is about it. Neither of the LEDs come on and I get no video, although the LED on the monitor stays green and does NOT go amber. I gather from this that the vid card is not the problem but I could be mistaken there, not sure. Also, I get no FDD LED action and I cannot even open the DVD drive which should work regardless if it is getting power. So I guess my questions are these: Is the PSU more than likely the culprit? Why am I getting the fans spinning up but no molex power? (could be related to first question) Is there anything else I am missing? Thanks in advance for your anticipated help. I think I will now smoke about 5 cigarettes in a row while waiting for responses. | ||

...Hmm...does the CPU fan get it's power from motherboard header? ...Hmm...does the GPU fan spin up, or does the GPU get warm? ...Hmm...is the polarity on the LED leads correct? ...Hmm...do the case fans get there power from molex connectors? ...Hmm...maybe it's time to suck it up and try another power supply, agreed?

1) Yes 2) There is no GPU fan, yes it does get warm. 3) Yes, although I have tried them both ways. This is not a huge deal in reality. 4) Case fans? You are kidding right? This is a desktop HP Vectra case with proprietary PSU. ![]() 5) More than likely. I am guessing I now have higher power requirements. Do you think this is the case? Necro: RAM is not an option as this mobo does not support anything higher than PC2100 (which BA just sent me). I possibly COULD try my PSU, but that would require cutting a lot of zip ties used for wire routing and is to be avoided if at all possible. I am thinking PSU as well (as I think it may have something to do with higher power requirements for the new mobo and CPU) which I hope is not the case, but I am prepared for bad news if that is the case.

An 8x AGP card will work in a 4x max board. It will only run at 4x though. I had a crappy PCChips mobo that only had 4x AGP and my FX5600 worked fine in it, but only at 4x AGP.

| You mean the nicotine? Like Dennis Leary says, "Smoking takes ten years off your life. Well it's the ten worst years, isn't it folks? It's the ones at the end! It's the wheelchair, kidney dialysis, adult diaper ****ing years. You can have those years! We don't want 'em, alright?" ![]() | ||

| I got 2 PSUs here I will part with.......one is a cheapy I pulled from a damaged case that Newegg didnt want back. Its an MGE and if you believe the overspeced drivel they put on the label its 350w 28A at 3.3v 35A at 5V 16A at 12v I also have a used power supply from a Dell........let me know if you want either of them. I can send them your way. | ||

| Aaron, that first one you mention would be great for the time being. I can even drive down and pick it up if necessary. You want anything in return for it? I guess I just need a case now, and now that I think about it, I would rather have a mid-tower over this desktop case anyway. I will just have to find room to put it. ![]() | ||

| I can even hook you up with a case........ Its actually an HP Vectra tower case.........I ripped the guts out of my HP and stuck them in another case. Its standard case - believe it or not. Just setting here, your welcome to it. I dont need anything in return so no worries there. I tested both PSU with a paper clip and they both spin. Specs on the Dell PSU are: 5v 22A 3.3v 18A 5v 14A The Dell PSU weights like 5 times as much as the cheapy MGE but I pulled it out of a computer with a dead mobo so it might be risky as I havent tested it in an actual machine. You can have any of this you want - let me know if you need anything else. If you want it shipped no problem but if you wanna come down your welcome to......... EDIT: Pics of case added. Also Im using the PSU out of this HP in my current server powering 3 - 200 GB hard drives, 3 case fans and cd-rom drive. Everything else is onboard so no gfx card but its doing the job just fine - of course maybe the desktop version is not as stout as the tower version. Mines a Vectra VL400. | Awesome Aaron, thanks a bunch. I could probably get them quicker driving down there, when is your next day off? Just PM me with any pertinent info. Edit: Aaaarrrrgghhh!!! It has that same proprietary front panel wire harness too just like this one (also a VL400, just the desktop version) which I had to "mod" with an Xacto knife to make the pins fit in their respective spots on this mobo. I am not looking forward to that again but I guess I can suffer as that case looks like it will fit nicely. You say that it holds a regular ATX PSU rather than proprietary? | Yes it holds a standard PSU, I think. I took the PSU out of it (the HP) and it fit in my standard ATX case (the one a trasplanted the parts into) so I think if I put two and two together that means the PSU mount in the HP was also standard. Yep, I held another PSU up there and the holes line up....... Those proprietary front panel connectors ARE a pain in the azz. For that reason I just connected the power button - screw activity LEDs.........they were not worth the trouble. Hey GF - that front panel pops out, there are just two clips holding it in. I believe you could pop your "already hacked' one out of your desktop case and pop it right in this one - would save you some time. | ||
