Default That Random reboot problem with XP revisited

I went home last night and after the initial shock of the new forums i got to investigating my XP reboot problem. I looked back to the DirectX 8.1b release which was on June 27th and decided that that must have been the source of the problem. I did a system restore back to the day before that and viola, no more random shut downs (so far anyway)

i am only assuming that it reset the directX version because it did manage to un-do a couple critical windows updates which i re-did. but in a nut-shell the thing ran all night last night with narry a hic-up.

give it a shot. hope this helps.

Thumbs up

start->programs->accessories->system tools->system restore

it is pretty intuitive after that. pick a date before you installed 8.1b and click restore. if you have any vital data stored since that date you will want to back it up. good luck!

Talking restore

Don't forget that nomatter which direction you restore, foreward or back, you eat 200 MB of your HDD. If you have a point that has been stable for a bit then I suggest deeting the extra restore points in the mem. No need for 8 points where 2 will do

I don't know what motherboard you have but I had the same problem. Here are a couple of things you can check out.
Chipset drivers. I have a kt7a and as soon as I replaced the chipset drivers with the latest via drivers it stopped happening. The ones that come with xp suck. www.viaarena.com
Audio Drivers. Especially if you have a sound blaster live or audigy card. They really don't like xp very much and cause problems. There were some drivers releaesed by compaq a while back that I downloaded and it helped some. I saw the post on hardocp so you can probably look through their old news posts. If you have a sound blaster card let me know and I'll try and find the drivers for you.

BZA...(in regards to not wanting to wake up) you might want to try to disable the Hard Drive from powering down in the BIOS and in Windows.

I know your starting over from scratch...but if you have the same issue with your new setup, it might be your HD not wanting to come back from sleep mode.

I have personaly had nothing but probs with sleep/suspend mode. Not my machine, but customer machines..

I found disabling those modes altogether fixed many, if not all the probs the were having... It's an ongoing prob with M$ and ALL versions of windows, except 3.xx (it didn't have any modes other than ON and OFF)

Just my opinion :p

EDIT: Stupid Dell USB Keyboard!!!

ProtoGremlin...in my expirence it either works or it does not. You can have the same exact make, model and hardware in two computers, one will be ok and one will not. I have numerous computers here at work that I support that have nothing but problems comming out of sleep mode. So in order to keep from having problems I disable it all together, on all the computers in my Division.
