Laptop XP Pro Install Trouble

OK, I got my sisters HP Pavillion N5430 (about 3 years old) laptop it had windows ME on it and I wanted to upgrade it to XP Pro. I delete all partitions and the disc starts formatting the HD NTFS (think thats what its called) and randomly halfway through it turns off the computer (suddenly). Yes, its plugged in, yes I tried different electric sockets, and yes its a legit copy of XP Pro (tried several times).

Also Note: ME was working on it before...

Is the hard drive bad? It stops formatting at random places... Also is there maybe some type of sleep mechanism turning it off suddenly?

I don't know but any help would be great as this is my first laptop. Also if it is the HD could someone show me where I could get a new one for cheap thanks...

Nvm I got it to work using the NTFS (Quick) formatting...
