Default Booting problem, no post, help

I'm having problems with my computer, It will boot, but will not post and every so often on a boot it will give me one long beep that repeats every couple of seconds. The computer has been working fine before this. My setup is:

athlon xp 2500
msi k7- delta L motherboard
1x512 kingston hyperx pc 3200
wd digital 200gb hdd
generic psu
windows xp professional w/ sp2

The computer turns on, all the fans run, and lights turn on. I've tried resesting cmos but that has not helped either. I've had this system for just over a year now with these specs. Any help would be appreciated.

1 repeating beep is a memory error. Try reseating you RAM and trying again.

It is award bios, and the long beep happens probably once every 5 times I turn on the computer. I've tried resetting the memory but that has not helped either. I'll see if i can borrow some ram from a friend and try his ram.

You may also want to double check and see if your CPU fan is plugged into your mobo header properly.

Thanks for the help godfoot. I checked to make sure my cpu fan is plugged in to the motherboard, and i've tried using my friends ram and neither has helped. I'm thinking it might be the power supply, but any other suggestions would help.

Reset CMOS (you've done that), move the RAM into another slot, check CPU FSB jumper, and check power supply. That's what I have had to do when I've gone too far on my K7N2-L.

I've tried all of that except for the power supply, and I think/hope thats the problem. I'll try it and see what happens. thanks for the suggestions.

Well this is what i've tried so far:
switched power supplies
tried a different hsf to make sure power was getting to the motherboard (my other hsf got power directly from the power supply)
tried a different video card (because i was gettting a no signal detected message when i turned my computer on)

So im guessing it has to be either my motherboard or CPU. One question i have is, is it possible for my hdd to start up, cdrom drives to start up, and lights to start up if my CPU is dead? Only reason i ask is because that is the last thing i have tried to change.

No offense kiddo but this question is something you can answer for yourself.

After intensive software diagnostics to no avail it's always time to swap out components
until it works, somewhere along the line you'll replace something that will fix the issue.

Start with the motherboard, then the CPU.

"No offense kiddo but this question is something you can answer for yourself."

Yeah I realize that in the end I will be solving my own problem, but I came here and posted my problem looking for suggestions that maybe I didn't come up with or maybe finding someone with a similar problem and having them tell me how they solved it. I thought thats what forums where for.

Anyways, I know it has to be either the cpu or motherboard, but I don't know if it will be possible for me to obtain a spare cpu and/or motherboard. But I have one question that could help me. If the cpu is dead, can my optical drives still start up and my hard drive start up?

If the CPU is dead, then the board will "Start up" the fans will come on, lights will flash etc.. but when it comes time to boot up...as they say "The lights are on, but no-ones home"
