Default General SATA Questions

Hello. I am quite a serial ATA neophyte, but my questions are as follows:

My system is based on the ASUS K8V SE Deluxe motherboard which features two integrated RAID controllers (one VIA, one Promise). I've already got one WD Raptor 36.7GB hard drive, and I'm planning to buy another complement very soon in order to establish a RAID 0 array; however, I am interested in buying another hard drive (likely 7200RPM, ~200GB) in addition to the second Raptor exclusively for file storage. Would I be able to put another serial ATA drive on the controller not taken by the future RAID 0 array (i.e., if I had two Raptors on the VIA controller, would I be able to operate another non-RAID drive on the Promise controller), or would I have to settle for and IDE drive that is independent from the RAID array. Or, alternatively, should I forego the serial ATA for an IDE drive altogether?

Secondly, for anyone who has experience with this board: does one controller provide better performance over the other? If so, which one?

Thanks for taking the time to read. I hope someone out there can help!

I have that board. Yes to Q1, no to Q2, and no to Q3. The Promise tested quicker.

Well, wait. Is that a go-ahead for the third serial ATA disk?

If you have 4 sata ports you should be able to run 3 in 2 separate arrays. My board has 4 on one controller and i have 2 in raid0 and one non-raid.

I have a question. I have a conflict in my Device Manager. I am running an Abit NF7-S and the raid controller has a question mark by it. Is it required to have those drivers installed for it? I really don't know much about Raid so help me out pimps.

EDIT:

I installed the supplied SATA drivers for the mobo. What does SATA do?

I have a different SATA ? that is not worth its own thread. If you put two hard drives in a RAID0 array, does the computer see it as one drive (i.e. you only have one drive to save stuff to) or as two seperate ones (like a C: and a D?
