Default Big Pc Trouble HELP Fast PLS

Ok so the other day while i was at school my dad was using my computer to print some stuff off. He then said he smelled something burning so he took the side case of trying to see what it was. Well while he was doing that he said it just turned off and it won't turn back on. Ok now im really hoping it's just my crappy power supply. It was a cheapy we got off ebay ,thing is there is still that little green light on , on my mobo under the pci slots, and when i turn the power supply off from the back then the light turns off. Hopefully the power supply is still the problem. So im needing to know what i should look for. Here are my comp specs, Amd 3000 + Proc, 1 Gig Corsair,120 Gb HD,A78NX Deluxe Mobo, 350 watt power supply.
I really have no idea what to look at and don't wanna go out spending money and that not be the problem.
Im kinda thinking it may be my cpu but hopefully not.

I Really need help in getting this sorted out. Any help is greatly appreciated.

From what you're describing the PSU is fried. Had a similar thing happen to me. Looks like the 12V rail was overloaded. The PSU is still supplying 5V, that's why the motherboard LED is on when you turn it on. You can just go and get a new power supply, and while you're doing that, pray to all the available deities that the old one didn't take anything else down with it. I'm afraid until you get a new PSU you really aren't gonna know...

Hey thanks for the fast reply. If anyone else has any ideas hit me up with them.

I think i'll go out and try and find a power supply. I was wanting a 450 watt anyways for when i get my 6800 woot. Just hopefully nothing else is messed.

If anyone thinks it's sumthing else chime in.

Sounds like PSU to me too. Do yourself a favor and don't screw around with your purchase decision this time. People underestimate how essential a good PSU is

Couldn't agree more. Get a decent PSU, there's no point saving on that. You only get what you pay for.

To find out for sure take your ATX (mobo) connector off the board (might be a good idea to disconnect all the molex connectors too) and using a paperclip that has been bent-up a bit, short the green wire (#13 or #14 I think) to a black one. if the PSU turns on, find a way to test your proc.

The reason I think it maybe the CPU, is you never said what you are using to cool it, if the fan is some cheppie meant for a 1500+ max, you've got toast... just a thought, and it could save you some headache.

You know, I was one of those guys that went ALL out on a brand new rig. Top of the line GFX card, top of the line CPU, fastest ram on the market and the cheapest damn PSU I could find.

Of course I had problems eventually. I believe it was one of the pimps here that told me "Why in the world would you spend so much on every single part in your rig, and so little on what actually fuels all those parts"

I have learned my leason.

Sorry for your pains friend, I learned the same leason the same way.

It was the stock fan on the cpu but i monitored temps and it never got high. It has 3 fans blowing in and 2 exhaust fans, and one on the psu.

Actually, this may not do any good. I have a PSU which can still be turned on, has stable 3.3V and 5V rails, only supplies no 12V. The only reliable way to test the PSU would be a) a multimeter or b) a dedicated PSU tester.

Without question you are right, I'm just suggesting a "ghetto" PSU test, since his won't even turn on...
