disc cleanup utility

while doing maintenance on my computer i`ve found that my disc cleanup fails to do so,
the program starts fine and gets the little bar graph to show what it`s doing but thats all it does,
i`ve tried a couple of times and sat there for ten minutes at a time but nothing happens,

what could be causing this

On some computers, 10 minutes for a Disk Cleanup is great time. Try waiting an hour or two.

the dfrag took about 2 and a half hours but usually the cleanup takes about a minute max
and my computer is far from slow at the worst of times
