Default Small CRT, Big rez?

Ok, so i have my 20" Cinema, but i also have a 15" CRT running off a PCI radeon 9200. I have 2 problems with this. The 15" wont go above 800x600, which looks absolutly huge next to the 20" @ 1680x1050. If i could get the 15" to at least 1024x768, it would look better, but the screen freaks out if i try to set it at that rez. The other issue is, on the 15", the display area is no where near the edge of the screen. Bout half an inch of black all the way around, and the (analog) dials are all the way. I remember seeing a software adjust for size and stuff deep in my ati stuff for this once, but i havn't been able to find it to fix this.

The 15" is prolly to old to run 1024*768. My 15" wont go over 800600, it goes crazy when you put it higher......

I dont know about the black space though....

Go into display properties/setting/advanced, in the displays tab click on the bar that sais monitor on the 15", uncheck the Use DDC information. Under regresh rate override, put in 43hz and set the maximum the same. Then, you should be able to set it to 1024x768. This worked my 15".

Had an old 15" Acer CRT a while back that would run 1024x768 fine refresh rate settings were at 60mhz. It was running a Rage 128 AIW. So if you're running a 9200 I think it should go up to 1024x768. Make sure all drivers are updated and can you give a bit more info of the monitor? like retailer and model number

Edit: Meant to say update video card drivers not monitor drivers, unless you can find those.

Oh no! A samsung Well definately see if you can get some driver updates on anything you can!

Samsung isn't a good company I've heard and experience myself...This is why...I didn't believe my bf when he said they were bad, had to replace 2 CD-RW's that went bad in the first month. Until lo and behold my new Samsung cam phone just dies on me no reason at all! Its screen was on and backlit, except it was just black you could tell it wasn't off but just showing the colors black on the LCD! Luckily T-mobile sent me in a new phone for no charge. So now I tend to stay away from anything Samsung!

So, I guess my 1995 Sony Trinitron 15" doing 1280x1024 @ 60hz is an oddity.

heh, do what dedbodyman said, lower the rez for that monitor down to 43hz..

I've only heard/experienced good things with Samsung monitors. I've had my 19" crt for 3 years with no problems whatsoever, and my dad just got a 19" Samsung LCD that's gorgeous (no dead pixels). Course, I may be wary of some of their other products now that I hear your experiences, Jess.

As for that 15", yeah, I got an old HP 15" that won't go above 800x600 either, and even that's at a low refresh. Even if you could run 1024 at 43Hz, would you want to? At that point, it's not flicker, it's just blinking.

Now would be a great time to buy a used CRT. You could probably get a 17" pretty cheap. A lot of people are going out and buying LCD's, and have no idea how/where to get rid of their old CRT. Local businesses may be getting rid of them too; I know my company just sold off a bunch of 17's for $25 each.

Yeah, the monitor was a freebie, so i cant really complain. Its the one i gave a 2 tone paint job and cut windows in. I may drop $100 on a 17" sometime, but its nothing i need or want that bad.

Good god, 15"...you poor bastards. I would think 800x600 is just fine for a monitor that minuscule.

If you could disable DDC you could force it into resolutions it probably can't do anyway, probably getting
the Out Of Scan Range error, but I guess a monitor that old doesnt even have a DDC channel.

Time to upgrade Cyno...running my 21" Trinitron 1280x1024@120Hz DDC-Disabled.

It depends on the quality of the monitor. If it was a cheap model (back in the day) there's no way it'll do 1024*768. If it was a more expensive model (you can't get much more expensive than a Trinitron CRT) then of course it'll go higher (it damn well better).

If it doesn't do 1024*768 at 60hz, then it's not suported, simple as that.

As for the black around the edges of your LCD, you'll need to bump the resolution to whatever the monitor's native resolution is to remove that black border. Otherwise, you'll need to turn off native mode. (so that the LCD stretches the screen to full width).

BTW - Samsung likely made the LCD in your LCD Jess...they are the worl's biggest LCD manufacturer, and supply most other companies with their LCD's. Samsung = LCD pwn4ge. How many times can YOU use LCD in one sentence?

Jeeze tekxiod, you can be quite harsh sometimes. Anyways I have a 17" CTX EX700F, running at 1280x1024 @ 60hz, and I seem to like it. Not a very expensive monitor either, I'm a value pimp . I'm sure you all know that by now. I know of all things cheap MUAHAHAHA.
