Default My brother is getting a "file is read-only error" when trying to copy from CD to HDD.

I wasnt there when this happened, so I dont know what exactly is going on or what could be wrong, but I couldnt think of anything off hand so....

My brother is trying to copy some powerpoints from a CD to his harddrive, but when he tries to do this he gets an error saying "Error: This is a read-only file". I cant see how this would happen except maybe if he was trying to cut the files? But has anyone had this happen, or know what he could be doing wrong?

More info: The CD hes trying to copy from is not a closed CD, but that shouldnt make a difference since hes trying to copy it onto the hard drive of a relatively new laptop..

Try selecting the needed files, and dragging them to the desktop, and if to no avail...use BlindWrite
to dump an image of the CD to the hard drive, then re-burn it and try accessing the files again.

Lol, turned out the files were....get this....read only! Anyone have an idea why the burner program is burning files as read-only? theyre not read-only on the hard drive. ive looked all over the programs options and found nothing to fix this

Make sure the Read Only box is unchecked on all applicable files.
Right-Click file>Properties>General Tab>File Attributes>Uncheck "Read-only"

I always thought that when data is written to a cd it is always read only. You cant write ir change the file. I may be wrong though.

I may be mistaken but I think thats normal - obviously the files will be read only if they are written to a CD.....you cant really change them afterwards.

Grabbed a few CDs and all the files on them are read only - it is after all write once media.
