Default PC not playing ball...

Hey guys,

Firstly - long time no visit!!!

Been a REALLY long time since i last posted here so apologies for staying away so long :-( Work, moving, life in general etc just been getting massively in the way i guess.

Anyway... im starting to get back into my geekyness and to start with it involved picking up one of these:

cappuccinopc.com : slimpro 620 800MHz FSB supports Hyper-Threading

for dirt cheap money.

Switched the internal hoover of a fan for a big fat 120mm quiet jobby and was so far so good... until last night.

Messing around with power settings (trying to convince it to wake from stand-by via IR remote...) and i think i may have done something as its seemingly FUBARd right now.

I sent the PC to stand-by and then... nothing...

I simply cant get it to switch back on.

The Power and HDD light turn on but there is simply ZERO mechanical noise and the CPU heatsink is not getting warm.

I removed all power and let it sit for a while, came back, tried again and same thing. The machine wont even POST. Literally nothing.

Any ideas? Toal CPU failure maybe? Power supply?

Was all working absolutely fine until i sent it to stand by then nothing.

Any ideas always appreciated.

Thanks

Mark

Did you take out the motherboard battery for 10 mins, then try again? And welcome back bro, stick around!

Arse...

Did full on BIOS clear and still no joy.

Got the multimeter out and started prodding around here and there. Seems im not getting a 12v signal on the molex that goes to the HDD.

As its a mini PC thingy there is only one molex which comes straight off the mainboard.

The board takes a 19V DC power supply which seems to be fine so im guessing that the onboard power circuitry is kaput.

Will be tring a few more tests, with varing levels of hardware actually plugged in but the lack of a 12V line at the molex seems pretty damming. I think the PC has got an appointment with Mr screwdriver coming up... Maybe ill be lucky and spot an obviously blown capacitor or something... maybe...

Could a bad CPU cause a total lack of POST and some funky voltage readings?

with a bad cpu, you would still get power to the rest of the system.

if anything jumper the power supply and then check the voltages... im sure the issue is with the powersupply.

just pray when it when belly up, it didnt take the farm with it

Yeah - there have been a lot of fingers crossed regarding this one...

It's not quite as simple as jumping the PSU... its a 19V 4pin brick style PSU as the PC in question is a small form factor thing (think i put a link in the OP...)

Far as i can work out it must have some form of DC-DC conversion on the main board itself. Traced the PCB tracks as much as i can but i think it leads under a load of other stuff that will need to be removed to get a closer look.

What is the absolute minimum amount of hardware i can have installed and still expect some form of POST (even if its just an error message...)

Nothing (Just mainboard & power)?
CPU?
CPU + Mem?
CPU + HDD?

etc

Thanks

Mark

I think Mainboard and CPU should result in some sort of error message, on most boards. Just keep plugging in more stuff if you get nothing. And if you never get anything ....

Surely if you recently bought it you can just send it back with a nice friendly RMA note...

That is the unfortunate side of buying off public forums ... so many good experiences get marred by a few numb nuts who cheat people.

good luck!
