Default Networking Noob

Right, im a networking noob, attempting to set up a home network of 2 computers, to share my cable internet.

I am using an older 10base hub i got along time ago.

My computer is working fine, im connected to this site thru the hub. The second computer is an old compaq pentium 1. Ive installed windows 98SE and an Asound 8139 NIC. the drivers are working properly, but the second computer cannot access the internet, nor can it see or connect to my main rig.
I cant think of any more info to tell u guys, but please do try and help me if u can.
thanks in advance!

Are you getting an IP number, if so what happens when you ping your other machine??? Or vice versa

i got ping timeout when i tried, in either direction. both computers are coming up with an ip and subnet, but the one thats not connected isnt coming up with a gateway, and mine is. Could that be the problem?

i also found in another post
"If the wires are connected to a HUB/SWITCH then you just need to get a Gateway Router and connect that HUB to it. If not, then get a HUB/SWITCH and then your Gateway Router." ~Fantasmic2
does this mean i need a router to make this work?

and to make it work offline, i also found in another thread
"Specify your ip addresses as 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 and with a subnet of 255.255.255.0" ~Sk8forMaple

Would that work? like i said, im just using an old crappy Link Act 10base hub

If youÂ’re running through a hub, did you let your ISP know that youÂ’re hooking two computers up? They will have to allow your modem to give out more than one ip. Also shut down the system that is online, unplug the modem (to have it look for a new connection) reboot the windows 98 box or run winipcfg when the modem sinks back up. You should be able to get online with it, if not it's a system problem, but I would think that it's because your modem is not flagged for more than one ip.

Yes a router would be your best bet. ItÂ’s more secure. Also no if you specify 192.xxx.xxx.xxx and your not behind a router then your ISP will just ignore the system.

alright, so i need a router for it to be online Ive been reading up a little, and i think im going to get one anyhow.

Since i wanted this lan more for offline anyhow, is there any way to make the 2 computers see each other through the hub? would i have to disconnect the modem from the hub to do this? because at the moment they dont see each other.
If not, i think ill go buy a router and get it overwith.

If you have an extra nic you can run ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) but Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows Me do not work very well, and in some cases, can trash your existing Internet Connection. You can use a crossover cable and have the two computers talk to each other, still pain in the .... well you know. I would go with the router, that way you can open both boxes up to each other and not worry about security as much.

My network setup is different. I have 6 rigs, and one is a 200MMX router i threw together, with a whole buttload of LAN cards, most just basic 10 Base/T 3Com ISA LAN's, a couple of PCI 10 base throwouts that actally turned out to work great, all I have to do to give a comp. internet access is just plug a crossover cable from one comp. to the router. But to do something like this in XP Pro is cake. You just right-click on a connection and highlight 'bridge this connection'. Volia! instant internet access!

Hope that helps some...

ahh well, as it appears, im going to go out and buy a router and case tomorrow. with a case i can build a better computer, and the router can make em go onto the internet. im just setting up this lan for fun while i have time, to play some network games with meh brother. i wanted a wireless router anyhow, tho i wasnt gonna buy it just yet.
so, hopefully tomorrow i can post what a success a linksys router can be.

I really do enjoy my network, its very handy. I just have a desktop wired to a wifi router, then a laptop connected via 802.11b. In Winblows XP this is very easy to setup. I have had horrible luck with the Internet Connection Sharing - never did get it to work. The router setup, however, took 30 mins at most to setup. I had a linksys, belking, SMC routers but so far Im having the best luck with a MIcorosft Router....ewwww!

Well, i solved my problem by buying a nice netgear router. Its a router with a 4 port switch, and its also wireless, 802.11b. I spent about 5 hours trying to get it to work correctly. Once i got the router, the 2 computers talked to each other just fine, but the internet wasnt working. After much reading, calling, and emailing, i found i just had to make it so the router would go to the page my ISP wanted it to go to.

After a half hour of reading the Netgear website, i found out i could spoof my computer's MAC address into the router, thus making the ISP think the router was just my computer. Since then, the internet has worked. I cannot test the wireless as of today, but soon i hope.

I thank all who attempted to help me in my network noobiness, i have learned alot about networking, and i quite enjoyed finding out how to make my network run.
I do believe i killed my 1.3 duron in the process, but i am as of yet unsure of that, so ill keep hope and u all can have a very Merry Christmas!
