| Apex Techie Wannabe | When I have my hookup running straight through the cable modem to my rig, everything runs fine. When I have it running through my router, everything runs fine, but there are random times when the modem shows a connection, the router shows activity, but I can't do anything ("this page can't be displayed etc etc"). This only happens about once a month and the only way to get my connection back is by re-wiring through the modem, then restarting, etc. Is there something I need to change? | |

| i once had a belkin hub that was a piece of crap but that was in like 98 or something. try to update your firmware and see if that helps. i am no pro at networking but i have always follwed a rule that works, If it stops working buy and new one and return the old one in the box. | ||

| Your router is fine. The problem here is either that your router DHCP lease expires (default monthly on some routers), or your modem and router both have routing capabilities and are both trying to send DHCP which kicks you offline now and then. It is also possible that your ISP makes you have a weekly/monthly IP change for security reasons. Does your ISP give you Static or Dynamic IP? What model is your modem? What model is your router? | ||

It's a dynamic IP. The modem? Whatever crap Comcast gave me It's an RCA.The router is a Belkin and the last firmware update was 9/4/02 The router is listed as "4-port cable/DSL gateway router"

I think Tekx has hit the nail on the head. Go into your router and check the options there. There should be something in the router configuration about this.

| Apex Techie Wannabe | Sorry, forgot to check in last night. I downloaded the new (well, new being 9/02) update at the website yesterday and did what it said, even though I had all of it done (change this setting etc). About two or three minutes after finishing, my connection went dead, again, although the modem and router showed activity. This was around 9 PM, a little bit after I'd gotten off work, then rewired it with no router and it worked fine. Again.
If I go to Advanced TCP/IP settings, it says DHCP enabled. Is that what you're referring to?

| Apex Techie Wannabe | OK I am happy to report that after going through the setup again, it works through the router for whatever reason. I didn't do anything differently, but it's working so I won't complain. Just wanted to let everyone know and to thank everyone | |
