Its time for one of my few and far between posts...
Ive got 2 little projects in the pipelines;
1) Home file / print server thingy
2) Media
PC
The idea for 1) is an On 24/7 print and file server that handles all torrenting etc etc. SO my plan for it is... tiny
OS disc with lots of storage attached by other means. Was planning on a tiny linux install on a ~ 512Mb CF card (low power, no noise etc etc.)
2) Media
pc... obviously want to be as quiet as possible... All media will be sourced from the file server in 1) leaving the only requirement for a local
OS. Again was planning either LinuxMCE / Mythbuntu, VERY slimmed down XPMCE etc etc on a ~ 2Gb CF drive.
Been reading though and apparently its not quite as easy as that. CF has a limited write life cycle apparently which makes it not ideal for HDD usage. There are way to drastically reduce the amount of writes the
OS does in both Windows and Linux.
Once its all installed i see no reason why it would EVER really have to write to the disc again? Clearly i dont fully understand how OSs work! lol. Im sure there would be writing needed here and there.
So whats people's thought on this? Anyone got anything similar to either set up running at the moment?
Mark
