Default Disk Initialize

So I pulled out my old man's HDD in an attempt to pull some info off of it, sense its about to die and now wont boot.

With it in my computer, it wants to initialize it. Seeing as how I have never done that with it having info on it, will it erase the info on there when I initialize it? Or will it leave the info alone?

Exclamation Re: Disk Initialize

STOP!

Initializing/formatting will remove ALL data from the drive! The disk is now so far gone your computer thinks there is no information on it and so wants to prepare the diek for new data.

Say you get a copy of a file extraction program (File Scavenger works for me), run it, as long as the PC reads that there is a disk there, you can search it for files, and recover them (audio and video type file might be incomplete.)

I found that (got this tip from a server admin) consistently turning on and off your machine (my pap turns his off every second he isn't using it...) actually lowers your hard drives life, the spin up and down on the motor lowers lifespan, eventually making the drive go bad.

Many other cause make drives go bad, dust can even do it. Good luck on recovering the data though.
