Laptop not booting up any disc.......

So i received the laptop i just bought from krimson. It's a Hp Omnibook 6100. I know he formated the hard drive before he sent it. So i put win xp pro in, boot up to cd first, nothing. It spun up for a second. I went threw the usual stuff; dvd-rom is recognized, boot order has cd as first boot, tried xp pro disc my ubuntu disc even my 98se disc, still nothing. Any ideas? laptop is a paper weight if i can't get a OS on it.

yeah, that is really strange because it absolutely booted an os for me. i had xubuntu live running on it for several hours before i packed it to make sure.

when it boots, pick the option that lets you pick what to boot from, and pick cdrom.. i doubt that would make any difference, but try it anyways.

i dont get what happened was.. i made sure everything worked before i sent it.

i did select cd-rom from list and still nothing. Weird, dunno what to do if it's the dvd-rom not working or something i'm missing.

Bump, Any idea's at all people. Bios doesn't support booting from usb, and i don't want to buy a new drive if it doesn't need it?

Have you tried a linux live cd? Confirmed the XP disc is fine? If so then I would say either cd-rom or hard drive.

Yup i've tried several OS linux and windows disc none worked. So i guess i need to get a new cd drive which is weird cause it worked w/ krimson and the bios see's it.

Try to reburn the linux iso at a very slow speed. Is anything on cd-rw. What is the drive maker? In my experience toshiba made optical drives are fickle picky garbage.

Drive is hp model. I've tryed both burned disc and some of my reinstallation disc. none are booting, linux or windows. If the laptop would boot to usb i could use a external drive but the bios wont let me.

Do you have a laptop hdd to ide adapter? Could try installing OS on the hdd in your desktop. Try pulling the cd drive out and reinstalling it. Eject the tray and clean the laser lense too. Might be a bad bios battery. Check and reseat any ram and mini-PCI cards under the bottom cover.

I tried all those, and just retried them. I do not have an adapter, those are cheaper than buying a new drive will the drive work if i get an OS on it? Or should i go ahead and buy a new one?

It should work fine after it detects the new hardware on boot. I read something on one of the guides about making a utility partition when installing a new hdd. Not sure if that matters if you're not using the recovery cd. You should put all the drivers you need on the hdd before you put it back in the laptop just in case network card isn't detected properly. You could take the opportunity to transfer any files you want on there too.

Update: I think I have found the problem. The ribbon under the dvd drive was slightly ripped, which explains why the bios recognized it and yet it could not read the disc. Me and krimson worked things out about the problem and a new drive should fix everything.
