| Well i checked my mem usage The biggest use is Iexplorer.exe 40,000K + and even when im not on the www , its using that much I also tryed uninstalling EVERY extra program I had on the rig and still, its slower than hell , and just opening a folder or file or storage drive causes the cpu usage to spike up to 70+% in some cases. Trying to browse the net is like wading through hip deep molasses . opening up something like VLCPlayer and then say the www at the same time locks up the rig for like 3 or 4 minutes..............I'm about to just toos in the towel and reformat the beast .any suggestions before i just wipe the drive and start fresh............ also opinions on OS XP Pro w/sp2 Vista Ultimate 32bit Ultimate 64bit XP Pro 64bit XP Black XP Crystal XP profromance edition ( 281mb) | ||

That may be your anti-virus running all the time in background , what kind of anti-virus do you got? my cousin had the same problem 90-100% cpu usage & later on found out that it was is anti-virus running all the time he couldn't find how to disable that "feature" so he uninstalled it & install another one & now he's all good. i think the anti-virus was f-secure or something like that?

| Well ................... Its 2AM and ive run every test i can think of Adaware, AVG , NOD32, Memtest, defrag, reg cleaner etc etc and even reformatted my main drive with Vista 32bit. Still the same problem , after about 5 minutes or even less it starts locking up / lagging. I'm thinkin its the Motherboard or the drive , tho the drive shows no faults/bad sectors ![]() Gonna try swappin out the memory tommorow , and then the mobo, then cpu ................ This ones got me stumped ![]() | ||

| Apex Tech Fanatic | get some sleep bro and come back with a fresh head. now, this shouldnt be anythign hardware related. if you have reformated with a Clean install and not a dirty install, the only thing left to think of the cause is a setting in the Bios. now you said you reformated your main drive... does that mean you have other drives hooked up? if so try just running with your main drive conencted and nothign else. process of elimination. like i said, hardware isnt going to make your CPU work at 90%+ power. its either going to work or its not going to work. memory shouldnt have any effect on CPU. i can see if you have a CD in your optical drive that maybe something goofy going on with CD-ROm, but like i said.. only if you have a CD in it. even if your hard drive was bad, it shouldnt cause your CPU to work too hard. so that leaves me with thinking there is either a rouge program on your other drives thats doing it or a setting in your Bios. only 2 things that makes sense to me. | |

| If I may suggest something completely stupid here .... But how do you KNOW all four cores are running 90%+? If your speedometer is stuck at 120mph, it reads that even when youre stopped at a red light. Maybe whatever is reporting 90% doesn't work with quad cores. Maybe some other software will report a different number. Just a thought .......... -MF P.S. Try Spybot? Last edited by Monsignor Funkibut; 09-November-07 at 09:12 AM. Reason: PS | ||

did you try (after format) only install Vista & drivers & nothing else see if it's goes ok? (only 1 drive) then if ok go install one program at the time (restart your pc after each install) & see wich one is going bad on you. the last thing i can think of is your Vista it's original , not d/l on P2P , right? you may need to update vista or wait for a new update that may fix it? dont know to much about Vista i'm still on XP...

didnt think of that. i was assuming you were looking at the task manager to see the CPU usage under the performace tab. you should see all 4 cores and what thier current status is.

| its possible that his cpu is overheating and stepping down its clock to compensate... also possible there is a snafu in his BIOS thats got his clocks all fudged and his cpu is running at an unusually slow clock speed if neither is the case, id suspect RAM as a culprit, try running memtest and see what happens | ||

| THINK PEOPLE!!!! Windows won't pick up a BIOS problem like that. If indeed this is Windows task manager reporting the CPU usage, (almost guaranteed; what else would you use to check processor usage on a Windows system???) then it's a Windows program (or programs) that is/are using the cycles. If it was a BIOS problem, it wouldn't show up in Windows. If it was a RAM problem, it wouldn't show up as high processor utilization. (Gee, my car's engine is running at 5000RPM at a stop-light...better check to make sure the spark plugs are working )This is what I mean: I have an 8-way server with 14 virtual machines on it. The CPU usage at any given time throughout the day is 50%-70%, when reading it through the performance monitor on the ESX host. However, when you look at any given Windows guest running on that host, their CPU usage is less than 5% typically. Windows only reports what it can see. Windows can't see the BIOS using CPU cycles. But that's just retarded too...the BIOS doesn't run applications. If the BIOS was causing performance problems all you would get is sh1tty performance in Windows. You wouldn't get CPU usage out of Windows Task Manager. Mace: In Windows Task Manager, try clicking the button "Show processes from all users" then clicking on the "CPU" header to sort the list by CPU usage. What process is using all the CPU cycles? Once you find out the name of the exe using the cycles, let us know; I can show you how to kill it if the 'end process' button doesn't work. I'm thinking it's a bad driver that's causing the problem, or goodman could be on to something if you're using an *ahem* less-than-authorized version of Vista...
