Default Comp Freezes on windows boot

Well here is the deal guys..a buddy of mine wanted to hook up a new hd to his comp so I helped him out...He has a compaq pesario 7000 which is a amd 800mhz...he bought a 160 gig maxtor hd..I isntalled xp on it and hooked it up..gives me the lil screen sayin widnows didnt not start properly blah blah and the lets u chosoe safe mode or start windows normally etc..when I do start windows normally the screen goes black then it just freezes...when I try to start it in safe mode it starts displayin the files its loadin and it always gets stuck no the same file...MUP.sys...dun kno wut it is...I tried hookin up the hd with a ata pci card and it did the samething...I tried a 30 gig hd with freshly isntalled xp on it and it does the same exact thing..I pulled out all the other drives...floppy..cd..soundcard...modem..al lthat stuff to make sure it wasent causni it to freeze...I used a dif psu and still nothing...changed ide cables and it still does it..put in dif ram and its the samething...but the thign is...when I hook the hd up to my comp...it boots without a hitch...I dun get it...I did install the os with the hd connected to my pc but I deleted the enum file in registry but maybe that could be causin a prob...if anyone can help it would be appreciated...I personalyl think the mb could be jacked somehow but lemme kno what you guys think...sorry about the long post.

So anyone know what is up? I am so stumped here it isnt funny...would just installin win 98 fix this? Or does anyone know if there are bios updates for these comps somewhere because I havent been able to find any.

First of all is your Xp cd been used before and worked because if it hasnÂ’t that may be it, second check your bios for anything funny, restore it to its defaults if you think its needed, make sure you are partitioning the drives right, make shure its not rying to boot from your slave or some weird junk. This happened to me once and I just reformatted and used a different disc and it worked.

I'd say that XP is chucking a wobbly cause you moved it from one machine to another. The ENUM key hack isn't a guaranteed winner.

Reinstall XP with the HDD installed in his rig, or try and repair the installation with the original XP CD (in case it isn't just a corruption of some system files due to the sudden hardware changes).

The drive works fine in my comp..loads without a problem...I have tried to repair the windows install and it still does it...I have also tried to disable the mup.sys from running in recovery consoel and it said the file didnt exist..I also cant install xp straight off his comp cuz his drives are garbage...in the middle of copyin files it will say it cant copy it then i have to retry and it will finally get it...would take me a few days to get that **** to install..I could install my cdrom drive in his comp but thats just more of a pain in the ass...bah I will rpolyl try that...the thigns we do for money..ty guys..I will let you know if it fixes it...I will try it tomorrow morning.

CD-ROM drives are cheap.....that would be alot easier. Hell I have a shelf full of them.

Well I put my cdrom in the other comp and reformatted and it worked without a problem...such a pain in the ass and such a easy fix...thought i would let you guys know how to fix this prob if it happens in the future.
