Default Ok I am Panicking My Sys Won't Start!!- Help!!

Hi -

First off my sys that I just built was running fine smooth as a baby bum. I had bought a new case for it (due to the one it was in was two small so too much heat) any way I move the sys to the new case turned it on and it ran fine, no problems. I decided to move one fan I have, an Antec Spotcooler, on my mobo to a diff spot. I did so an now its all bunged. I turn the thing on and it starts to turn then shuts off then after about a sec it will come back on but it will now blare a loud consent beep (for lack of a better term). It has things running but I don't think its booting up etc... I mean fans move but I don't see my monitor come on etc....

I am, for lack of a better term, freaking the frick out as my job and my schooling is completely online and I am don't want to be screwed. Please Help.

If memory serves me right one long beep is common award bios code for a video card error.

Try removing the video card and reseating it and make sure you didn't knock something loose. Has happened to me plenty of times.

A long beep could also mean a heat issue. I've had a few boards that when the temp goes over the overheat protection setting, it will restart and let out a loud annoying beep.

One long beep is normally video or memory related i think. Turn your monitor on and see if u get a no signal error during boot up? Re seat ur memory, cards, plugs (inside and outside the case), If that doesn't work start swapping out video cards or memory till u find the culprit.

Here's a section from ur manual, i don't see anything about a one long beep thou.

standards or if it has a “power standby” feature, the monitor LED may light up

The system then runs the power-on self tests or POST. While the tests are
running, the BIOS beeps (see BIOS beep codes table below) or additional
messages appear on the screen. If you do not see anything within 30
seconds from the time you turned on the power, the system may have failed a
power-on test. Check the jumper settings and connections or call your retailer
for assistance.

BIOS Beep Description

One short beep
VGA detected
Quick boot set to disabled
No keyboard detected

One continuous beep followed by two short beeps then a pause (repeated) No memory detected

One continuous beep followed by three short beeps No VGA detected

One continuous beep followed by four short beeps
Hardware component failure

1-3-1 beep is usually memory. 1 long beep is video card related. Reseat, bro, like the rest of the pimps have suggested

Check to make sure there are no obstructions in the PCI-E slot. A friend of mine had an issue like this when he tried to use a motherboard I'd left lying about for a couple of months - turns out, there was a little dust in the slot preventing video initiation.

I'll add my "reseat everything" to those that have already said it, because it can't be said often enough.

Chances are, you knocked something when you moved the fan. Power cable, video card, memory ... doesn't matter. Something got knocked, so re-seat everything, check the power cables, check everything.

Wait, wait. You said you relocated the motherboard fan?

Alot of motherboars have a feature that will not allow the system to post if it is detecting 0 RPM from the CPU or the northbridge fan.

If this IS what you did, try plugging a fan into the header you removed the antec from, and see if it boots.

That's a good catch, FireDemon, and a good point for everyone to remember.

In this case, however, I don't think the Antec Spot Cool is a CPU fan ... let me check ... nope, definitely not!

ps -- after re-thinking FD's comment, is it possible you had the Spot Cool plugged in where the cpu fan ought to be, so moving it resulted in the system problem FireDemon described?

Don't know why I said CPU fan. I meant chipset fan. Alot of boards have this feature on the chipset fan header as well.

EDIT: LMFAO! I actually googled "Antec SpotFan" just now and the look on my face was priceless.

If you didn't have it plugged into an RPm sensitive header, then I'm not sure what to tell you other than a video card issue.
