Default wireless network intruder

I live in a small neighborhood with probably 7 houses around me. I use a wireless access point within my wired network. I've had it for quite a while and left it completely open so that anyone could use it but no one did.

Just recently I've noticed that someone else has been using it. I set MAC address filtering on it which should keep them out but what if I wanted to figure out who it was? What would be the best (preferably free) way to figure out who is accessing it? Its really no big deal but it would've been nice if they had asked first if they could use it. The access point is renamed to my name so the person must have seen it when they connected.

did a computer name show up with that MAC address?

Take a look at the closest 2 people, which is more likely to have a PC? Do they both?

You could aways just ask them as well.

Look in your DHCP Client List. You left your point opened and unsecured. Anything like that is free game. Secure it , dont broadcast your SSID or do both if you want privacy. You could also use war chalking symbols if you want to leave it open.

Thats not going to help. I can receive some elses wireless from about 500 feet away, hard to pinpoint where people live, since theres so many houses around. If I had 3 laptops, then I can triangulate their position. I can recieive my own at about the same distance (including trees and such).

It is if they use it for illegal activities, such as pirating files. I would secure your network first, then ask questions later.
