Default Interfaces for file storage rig, any ideas?

Sup guys,

I've got my filthy mittens on an almost finished file storage setup. Still waiting for a few bits; sata controller/s, misc cables, couple more hd's. I've also just finished my network, finally got off my lazy ass and cleaned it up and sorted some static ip's, atlast

Anyway, this rig i've almost got finished, what sort of interface shall I use for browsing/transfer across my network? I'm sick of the standard windoze network browsing, i'm not gonna enable every folder on that computer for file access What are my options? shall I go for setting up an FTP on that rig with full system access? So pretty much FTP up the hard drives as i install them? or shall I just stick with the doze interface, with it correctly configured? if you can suggest somthing else, go ahead.
O/S. Shall I go with 98? this setup isn't the best but it will run xp lastly, how about nux? If I go with nux, will compatibilty be a problem while browsing, accessing files via the network and will PNP with my hd's be a problem?

Throw me some ideas guys and if nux does come into the picture, recommend some versions and some instillation guides(don't tell anyone that though)

Hope I can get some feedback, thanks guys.

I just built a server, i'm using windows networking, because it allows most things to behave like theyre on a local disk. I only have 3 folders shared, Music, Videos and a general NAS folder for whatever, look at what you're going to be doing, and i bet you dont need as many shared folders as you think. Plus like i said, this way you can treat them like local files. My entire winamp library is pointed to the music folder on the server, same with my VLC playlist. It all works out pretty well, and the only time i have the monitor switched to the server is when i want to watch videos and play a game on my main rig. Although since i started WoW, thats quite frequently.

don't use 98, try NT 4.0 or 2000 at least, they are serverside OS's from M$ and will run on just about anything. I would make a domain ideally, file servers aren't the friendliest to workgroups, when it comes down to file usage from the fileserver.

I honestly haven't had any problems, everything is running XP Pro, i can play any file from the server on any computer, even mount CD images over the network, and vice versa, i can get stuff off optical drives on other computers (no opticals in the server). The server has been up and running without so much as an OS crash for 2 months.
