Default router problem

as some of you may know, im on cable now and a lil problem is occuring that kinda pissing me off LOL

i have a Belkin router and the cable modem is hooked up to it

then router is hooked to my switch..and then from switch it goes to all the computers around the house

problem:

sometimes router stops assigning the ip address ( i guess) to the switch and the im not being able to connect to internet and stuff....so i tun off switch and turn it back on and everyhintg works again

any idea why this is? defective router?

hmm could be faulty, but most routers you for home use needs to be restarted from time to time, i suggest you get a old computer put in two nics and install smoothwall or ipcop on it, u just can't get a better firewall/router combo for" free"

u can use a 486 as a router withe these, if you have one..

I personally would go for a router switch combo, gateway . i have the compaq ( now hp ) and a netgear and have nwver had any problems. never had to reset them yet.

have you enabled dhcp on your router? what kind of switch are you useing?

I have the same router, I think.(the only one Belkin makes?)

I would set it to hold IP's for 15 minutes, so you get a new IP when you want one? Just play with some of the settings in the routers' IOS.

Clown...might be a dumb question...are you running wireless to the Gateway Router or Wired?

If your wired, then I'd say you got bad hardware/firmware...have you tired to update it?

----

2nd idea?

If you plug directly into the gateway router without the switch, do you still have the same problem?

its wired......i check for firmware update, and there is none....

ya and i guess i would try plugging myself to router directly instead of going through the switch......but then again my switch worked just fine when i didnt have cable..

There is really no need for a switch, the router puts out 4 ports, isnt that enough?
