Default ports

I have a laptop I use for work with 2000 server on it
I have sequel server 2k on it as well
we have programs that require two way communications
like sending changes from one comp to another piece of equipment and vice versa
My problem is I'm not able to receive info from some sources but I can always send to these
Our help desk told me to check and see if ports 80 and 8888 were open
I don't know how to tell if they are or not and to be honest I was a little embarassed so I told them I would have to get back to them later
any one have any tips on how to check
Thanks

type your local ip into a browser and check firewall settings, or if your not blocking people from pinging you someone could nmap and see what ports are open/closed. post your external ip ill give it a shot

edit: you may also want to look for "port forwarding" which is what its called when a port is opened to let programs run stuff in and out, your also going to need to know if its UDP or TCP but i wouldn't worry about that now

my "server" has a dhcp assigned IP
the other equipment I talk to one is UDP which works both ways just fine
the other is tcpip and I put a static ip subnet gateway in I can send info to but I can't receive from this one
I have tried more than one as well so it'ss not the hardware
the device is configured correctly as well and I can make it correctly using another PC

I didn't bring the laptop home with me so I can't give ip info
until tomorrow

I can check the firewall settings then as well
thanks for the idea
that completly didn't come to mind
