Default Overclocking: Wikipedia

The overclocking entry on wikipedia, really could use some information, it free to edit allday, some may not like what you add, or subtract, but it can use a good bit of info. I've addeda few things and verified a few things that weren't quite positive (the wanted verification really). So i encouragesome of our overclockers, to add what they think is missing, or remove what they think is B$

Kinda like the computer parts catching fire i removed. Although theparts will smoke up after no heatsink such as in that video i think toms hardware did, they do not literally catch on fire and burn, the nanometer sized electronics in the CPU might but nothing dangerous, unless you have you finger on it.

anyhow heres the link

submersion isnt really effective as a cooling method for overclocking as far as ive heard

Increased clock speeds and voltages result in higher power consumption and therefore higher power bills.

Not really, Its only a couple more cents per day to run it, its not like its going to amount to a huge ammount.

Overclocking will not necessarily save money. Non-trivial speed increases often require premium cooling equipment to avoid unacceptably high temperatures. It can also become an expensive pastime. Most people who consider themselves overclockers spend significantly more on computer equipment than the average person.

We only do so because the stock coolers SUCK. And what, Its only 40 to 50 Bucks more for an air cooler, pfft aint that much more than the rip off dells.

More common than hardware failure is functional incorrectness. Although the hardware is not permanently damaged, this is inconvenient and can lead to instability and data loss. In rare[3], extreme cases entire filesystem failure may occur, causing the loss of all data.

Never heard of someone having to reformat because of an Overclock, jeese these guys are n00bs!!! You were right, hopefully someone doesnt read it and decide not to overclock because of it.

I do have to correct you on this one. It is possible that as a result of overclocking files become corrupted and a reformat and reinstall is the only way to fix it. If, for example, windows is updating a system file and the computer crashes that file becomes corrupt, potentially causing the entire OS to not work. Of course once you get the overclock stable this is not an issue, but when you are first trying to figure out how far you can push it it can be.

Stock coolers USED to realy suck, like back in the Athlon XP era, but with 90NM Atlon 64's, you can get quite a healthy OC using the stock one if you do a few things...like using AS-5, and using a larger fan than stock, or simply making the stock fan run at full speed...though you don't have to even go that far for a decent OC

The Opteron dual core chips ship with a heat pipe cooler that fares extremely well against aftermarket coolers once you upgrade the stock fan!

On the Intel side of things, the Core 2 Duo is a cool running chip like AMD 64's, so you can get quite a nice OC using the stocker!

I was able to run Pi at 3.87GHZ using the stock Intel cooler on my E6600, now granted..that is not probably a speed I could sustain when both cores are loaded, but I realy didn't get into any real depth at that time with it...I may retest it down the road.

I would say as long as you don't worry about getting the last 200-300MHZ from a CPU (Cause voltages need to be ramped sharply as you reach your max OC) then the stocker holds up just fine!

Check out how Anand did with stock cooling, and you know he doesnt realy push the hardware to the ragged edge....

E6300
1860 MHZ 1.32v stock
2592MHZ 1.4v Overclocked
732MHZ OC!

E6400
2130MHZ 1.3v stock
2883MHZ 1.35v Overclocked
753MHZ OC!

AnandTech: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 & E6400: Tremendous Value Through Overclocking

In another article he did some testing with a E6600, E6700 and X6800 using both stock and aftermarket cooling...you can read the results yourself!

I'm surprised there isn't any section on the 'binning' done by manufacturers, I'm no expert on the subject, but there should be atleast a section devoted to the fact that your crappy $200 cpu could be on par with a $800 one.
