Default Harddrives showing incorrect space.

what's up guys, a friend of mine has a 160gb and a 300gb hard drive, he recently formatted 'cause both hard drives were showing as 137gb each instead of it's normal size. So he tried to format again to see if that would fix the problem, but it still shows incorrect capacity.

pc specs:
pentium D 3.0ghz
2gig of pc3200
160gb ata100 - primary drive
300gb ata100
windows xp

Does he have the latest BIOS and Windows updates? I know you need a certain Windows update for Windows to recognize hard drives larger than 137 GB.

Yeah he needs to get either SP1 or SP2 I can't remeber which. The problem is that when Windows XP was written they thought that either we would never have 137GB hard drives or that they were planning on releasing a new os by the time that hard drives were approaching that size.

he has SP1 and SP2 installed and the problem still occurs. he's also tried using magic partition, the windows disc manager, and tried the Seagate installation disc also. none of that worked.

Make a DWord Value = EnableBigLba

It turns out that he didn't have all the SP2 updates installed, so now the problem is fixed. Thanks to all who helped.
