Default *HELP* Wipe-Drive?

I have a few questions about "Wipe-Drive's"

1. Do they completely delete everything on the PC???
2. Are there any "good" wipe-drives? Or are they all the same?
4. Could I find them at Best Buy?
3. Are theere any "free" wipe-drives?

The only way to truely erase a drive is to destroy it , but as for wiping one , yes there are freeware programs available or you can buy one. Acronis makes a very good drive cleaner (for purchase )

or try here for a d/l ulitity

I good freeware wiper prog I've used is called KillDisk. It goes beyond formatting and sets each individual sector to zero... so when it's done, there's absolutely nothing on the drive... not even a partition or boot sector. I highly recommend this program.

Good idea. There is only one downside to something like that, however. It severely reduces the life of the drive because it is so intensive.

Just something to keep in mind.

Wink Eraser

I used a free one called Eraser awhile back to destroy a vet's financial data on a Mac he was giving away [moved SCSI drive to my PC]. Erases to DoD standard according to the hype.

I use Boot n' Nuke, works greats, but takes a long time on higher capacity drives.

Boot and Nuke is probably the best of the free ones. And better then most pay ones...

I second (or third) the Boot and Nuke support. Before that, I'd merely clear partitions with fdisk, write Windows to the drive, then departition again.

I for 3 think Boot and Nuke is the best way to go unless you want to pay for the program............

I agree with HigHTecHReDNecK...destroy the drive. If the data is that sensitive, then you have no choice, but if it's not that big of a deal then just format. No need to put the extra stress on the drive. No matter what program you use, there is ALWAYS a way to retrieve the data. It may be extremely difficult after these programs, but I have a file recovery program that can recover files after killdisk has been used. These programs all pretty much work the same.
