Default Old PII 450MHz temp question

Do any of you know the temps these old things run at? My boss just has to have 2 of them running, I got the first one going with no problem. The second one has no fan, and the CPU heatsink is very hot, and acting strange (sometimes no boot, sometimes a boot) This is on an old Dell Optiplex GX1 desktop, and when I say hot, I cannot keep my hand on the heatsink for more than 2 secs.

I am going to try MBM, but did not see any temp readings in the BIOS, so I do not have much hope. Do they normally run this hot?

Thanks a lot for your time, I did do a quick google search, did not find much. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Have a good one!

E

MBM does not support this computer, so that is out.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, yes they do get that hot, but there should be an exhaust fan for those heatsinks. The heatsinks on them are crap.

Most boards from that era don't support tempature reading.

You can get another HSF for the one that overheats, or maybe the stock paste under it has given up, try a fresh coat of AS-5 on it and see if that helps.

You might be able to tie wrap a fan onto the stock HS, or mount it in the case so that it blows over it, that should help a bit.

If its the stock heatsink, you can screw in a small 60mm fan into the side of it. Or if yer real crafty you can break the old plastic heatsink clips off, and install a new heatsink and fan assembly.

Default Thanks for the help!

Well, now all of a sudden the thing is stable, and not very hot to the touch. I will recommend a fan to my boss, then inspecter 12 gives up and lets him have his nice shiny used 450mgz compruter! This is the first one I have seen without a Dell duct and fan. I am guessing someone snagged it before my boss got it.

I have to give Dell credit, they sometimes did a nice job on these old machines, with a duct, fan, and actually a desktop case that is easy to work with.

Thanks a lot for the quick replies!

Have a good one!
