It's been done here in the past, but I don't realy see the need unless you are trying to save money, or run a peltier. They have Power supplies at 1000watts these days, that article was written when a 450 watt power supply was the best available.

It should work with disimilar power supplies too, but I am not "Positive"

you just need to connect the green wire in the PSU with the green wire in the other PSU, make sure there both grounded and when one comes on the other will too....

I've used second psu's on cases for extra stuff like fans, watercooling, lights, etc. I put one of those wire joining things, u place two wires in it side by side and then snap it to make a connection, i did that to the green and black wire then i even took some of the other wires from the 20-pin to use on other stuff.

We (Computer Wizards) had a simular problem....16 hdd's and 10 fans...2 optical drives...a tape drive and a P4 Server board with a 3-ware 8 channel sata raid controller.....I was talking to Twizted about this problem and said that he had the solution if I had a second P/S

So I waited til 36 hour lan madness last Aug. and Twizted brought up a few toys for me.

as I said 8 sata drives in a raid 5 with a hot spare and 4 120's in a raid 10 (0+1) the 80 gig for os and other store stuff and a 40 gig for dvd images.

This IS a Wiring night mare

3- 120 fans to move air across the drives to keep them cool...and they get dirty when they run 24/7

Look!!! nice convenient spot for the second P/S

Twizted is checking it out and is eyeballing the location of the dragonTap and the P/S switch...

moving some wiring around and getting the fan leds in place...

doing some final test on the circuit.

all in place...and fans are back in....now to fix the wiring......what....next summer????

Yours truly very impressed with the work....

Both Units are mounted using brass motherboard standoffs and low profile screws.

View with all in and the final desision to wait on wire managment....system can't be down for as long as it would take to fix the mess.....might have to think about an upgrade....

And what would be any product from DragionModz be without the blue LEDS!

Thanks to Lokie and Twizted for the hard work of getting MOM offline...apart....upgraded...and reassembled and back online all in a couple of hours....

Thanks DragoModz!

I use a second PSU for my water pump and fans on the rad.

However it is not in the case, or connected to the other.

I just used my old ultra PSU and ran wires to connect it to a switch panel. So all I do is flip the switch and the pump and rad fans come on.

DC=Direct Current. You wouldnt want AC in your system (well except for the clock signal and RPM fan speed)

Although they are becoming harder and harder to find, an AT PSU makes it very easy to add a second power source.

for a second PSU id go with another ATX supply because of the power on pin. that way you can have it automatic instead of having to flip another switch unless you want the second PSU always on. plus if you have it for cooling it would be easy to have delayed shutdown of the second PSU with a 555 timer device or adding a relay to a delayed fan thingy.
AT supplies are handy for bench testing but once you know how to jump an ATX supply you start using whatever is closest on the junk pile.
if you cant find AT supplies and just need 12 and 5 volts you can pick up an open frame supply like for external hard disks at most computer surplus stores. they can be kind of finiky since they usually want a load at all times or will chirp at you. you can pull them out of used SCSI boxes too or anything similar but they usually top out at 1 amp on the 12 volt rail.

I'd have 2kW of power then, just for the hell of it ... even if my rig only pulled 250W

that mighht explain the fire in the uk you posted JE.... did you go playing with PPAC 850s? hehe now that would be a sweet dual psu. the one that mnpctech used in the stingray.

back on topic. these days you can buy a 20 or 24 pin atx psu connector for running 2 psus together no wiring jumping needed. granted it isnt nearly as fun. but it doesnt void any warrenties.
