Default 2005 TOP500 list got released

The 2005 TOP500 list is released (11/2005).

Here's a summary/stuff that I find interesting:

1. IBM/BlueGene L - DOE/NNSA/LLNL - 131072 processors, 280.6 TFLOPS
2. IBM/BGW - IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center - 40960 processors, 91.29 TFLOPS
3. IBM/ASC Purple - DOE/NNSA/LLNL - 10240 processors, 63.39 TFLOPS
4. SGI/Columbia - NASA/Ames Research Center/NAS - 10160 processors, 51.87 TFLOPS
5. Dell/Thunderbird - SNL - 8000 processors, 38.27 TFLOPS
6. Cray/Red Storm XT3 - SNL - 10880 processors, 36.19 TFLOPS
7. NEC/Earth-Simulator - The Earth Simulator Center - 5120 processors, 35.86 TFLOPS
8. IBM/MareNostrum - Barcelona Supercomputer Center - 4800 processors, 27.91 TFLOPS
9. IBM/Stella - ASTRON/University Groningen - 12288 processors, 27.45 TFLOPS
10. Cray/Jaguar XT3 - ORNL - 5200 processors, 20.527 TFLOPS

combined total: 238,720 processors, 673.357 TFLOPS.

Makes one helluva folding team, eh?

For the complete list: http://www.top500.org/lists/2005/11/basic

Interesting notes:
  • 5 of the top 10 are IBM.
  • Sandia has 2.
  • The SGI system @ Ames Research Center is based on Itanium2 (which is almost an exact copy of the POWER5 chip, or at least very very very very very simliar. Coincidence? I think not. You'd think that Intel would have learned a thing or two for their up-coming generation of consumer market processors because of that???)
  • The two Cray systems are based on the AMD Opteron chip with I think Cray's proprietary interconnect system
  • The #1 system has 128ki processors. *sic*
Wonder in addition to their ability to perform and do the stuff that they do, if they are trying to kill the rest of us who actually has to pay for the increased cost of energy?

Other interesting notes for those in academia:

Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (#13, trans. "Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne"), Virginia Tech (#20), UCSD (#35), HWW/Universität Stuttgart (#37), Caltech (#41), Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (#44, joint venture between Carnegie Mellon, and UPittsburgh), University of Sherbrooke (#51), Nagoya University (#52), Soeul National University (#64), Brigham Young University (#66), University of Oklahoma (#67), KTH - Royal Institute of Technology (#70), Boston University (#74), MIT (#76), Princeton University (#79), UCSD (#80), University of Edinburgh (#81), UIllinois (#85), Kyoto U (#86), PSC (#87), UTennessee SimCenter @ Chattanooga (#90), Caltech/JPL (#92), Chinese Academy of Science (#93), Texas Advanced Computing Center/U. Texas (#95)

(top 100). Some fairly interesting, some that I didn't expect (i.e. Tennessee??? *shrug* apparently...)
Some that I expected to be there isn't, and others that are there aren't as high on the list as I would have expected (Princeton - I guess that must reflect/indicate that either someone graduated, moved, transferred, retired, or a major budget cut.)

Others that are interesting:

#96 - Walt Disney Feature Animation, HP Xeon 3.06 GHz cluster, 1110 processors, 4.131 TFLOPS.
#304 - Sony Picture Imageworks, IBM Xeon 3.06 GHz cluster, 568 processors, 2.133 TFLOPS
#240 - Environment Canada (think USGS, only better), IBM pSeries 690 1.3 GHz, 960 processors, 2.56 TFLOPS

In reviewing the new list - what I DIDN'T realize is how involved HP is with supercomputer tasks. I mean, half of them are IBM, and the other half is dominated with HP (in particular their SuperDome.) That to comes to me as a bit of a shock, cuz I thought that HP was dead (i.e. HP-UX, not their consumer stuff), but it's VERY much alive and kicking. Not setting any records or getting a lot of publicity, but it's there. And plenty abundant.

For more information about really cool, crazy, supercomputing stuff:

can't - cuz they don't have the program ported yet! (grr...okay...that is getting to be really old and the lack of a port for those systems are getting really really annoying.)

I HOPE that those people behind F@H are reading this?

YOU HEAR ME? PORT THE DAMN THING ALREADY! GRRR.......GAHHH........ka-plow *blows up*
