| Apex Techie Wannabe | Im building my comp in acouple weeks, however im looking for opinions to help me decide which is the best choice. Games today require much more power than this old rig im running so help me out ppl. When you pick one of the choice please state why, that'll help me learn as well. Please keep in mind this rig is mostly for gaming so i'll like to overclock it to it's max protential. im also a total noob! CPU AMD64 3700+ San Diego = $255.00 or AMD64 3500+ Venice = $219.00 Heatsink + Artic Silver 5 Thermalright XP 90C Copper Heatsink = $45.00 +Panaflo 92mm fan or Thermalright SI 120 = $45.00 +Panaflo 120mm or ? Memory Unbuffered Right? 1 GB DDR (2 pcs 512) PC-3200 (400) OCZ Platinum Revision 2 = $165.00 or 1 GB DDR (2 pcs 512) PC-3500 (433) OCZ Gold Gamer eXtreme = $173.00 or 1 GB DDR (2 pcs 512) PC-4000 (500) OCZ Dual Channel GoldVX = $183.00 or 1 GB (2 pcs 512) DDR (500) PC-4000 Mushkin Redline = $186.00 or Should i go DDR2? it's around the same price.. is it suppose to be better than DDR1? MotherBoard DFI Lan Party UT nForce4 SLI-DR = $170.00 or ? Power Supply OCZ 520w PowerStream = $119.00 or ? Video Card I'm just getting one now probably a yr later i'll add another to take advantage of SLI. eVGA 6800 GT 256MB DDR3/PCI-E/TV-Out/Dual-DVI = $310.00 or ? I think that covers it.. | |

| From your list I would go with the 3700+ San Diego, ThermalRight XP120 (I assume this is what you mean't as I didn't see SI model at newegg), I would go with Corsair over OCZ anyday of the week. I haven't heard of a NForce board or AMD CPU that will use DDR2 so scrap that idea. The DFI mobo is a good one, I just bought a Abit Fatal1ty AN8 SLI instead. Once again I wouldn't buy an OCZ P/S either expecially at $119. I would go with an Enermax or Antec. And I wouldn't spend $310 on a 6800GT when you can get a 7800GT for just $65 more. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150108 | ||

| Nope he mean SI-120, new'ish cooler from ThermalRight. http://www.hartware.de/review_495.html Like the SI-97 but for Athlon 64 and in a 120mm flavour. Allthough it looks like the XP-120 without the fins comming from the base. | ||

Thanks for the link. It's good to learn something new. I'm now recommending the SI-120 over the 90. I have (2)-XP120's on P4's and they are both awesome, I'm sure the SI model will be 2. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Apex Master Tech Apprentice | Good parts, however I'm a bit twitchy trusting Antec for anything besides cases. Seasonic, on the other hand, is another story. Seasonic 500w I also found a better deal for your choice in ram (with rebate) The original XP-120 has all sorts of problems with Motherboard compatibility. The SI is likely to have some of the same problems. A Vapochill Micro will probably provide similar performance. | |

| The DFI mobo is a great mobo for experienced overclockers, but based on your questions I am not sure that it is the right one for you. Are you going to overclock? There is a great deal on Newegg - buy an evga video card and get their SLI mobo for FREE linky They have two combos one with the 7800GT and the other with the 7800GTX Food for thought... Just a quick note: there's a great comparison of the Venice vs. the San Diego at Phoronix that concludes with: "The AMD San Diego is one hell of a screamer for single-core setups, but with its high price tag, the small performance increase isn't truly justified unless you'll be coding and compiling all day or a similar CPU intensive process." And the Venice is one hell of an overclocker, to boot. Just FYI. Welcome to PR! -godling | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
